Ted Ramasola and Armi Garma have reportedly wed and put an end to rumors by deciding to get married on July 4 at the Panglao Island Nature Resort Grand Pavilion. Reports mentioned lately that usually it's Ted who wants to get married and Armi postpones it every time. But this time it was Armi found that it’s better to get married to put an end to the stories; a decision that made Ted very happy.

The wedding was Ted’s second “after a relationship is down the drain” and Armi’s first. “They are planning a quiet celebration just for family and close friends,” revealed Bared Very Reliable Source (VRS). Neither wants the kind of big fanfare.

Thankfully, Ted and Armi didn’t pretend that they love each on the wedding day because they loved 24 years back when they were still in high school at the Divine Word College High School Department (now Holy Name University – High School Department). They parted ways – living oceans apart and pursuing their individual careers. They met again in 2005 during the DWCT HS Batch ’85 20th Year Reunion and the “kilig” factor still worked. Love moves in mysterious ways…and realized that they are still madly in love and the rest was history.
“Ted has never made any secret of his desire to marry Armi, so he is thrilled,”
according to a close friend of the couple.
“The wedding was officiated by Judge Leo Moises Lison. Close to 250 family members,
friends and batch mates from HSS Class 81 and DWCT HS Batch 85 were in hand to witness the celebration of love,” added by VRS.
The whole place choked with emotion as the couple sealed their love with a kiss.

• The Bohol International Film Festival has been postponed indefinitely (or no more?) as the Bohol Film Development Organization, Inc (Bofido) headed by Direk Maryo delos Reyes and Cesar Montano has decided to scrap the ambitious project which was supposed to be held from July 18-25 for insufficient funds and time for preparing logistical requirements.

Since it started in 1950s (with different names like Miss Bohol, Miss Young Bohol, and renamed Miss Bohol Sandugo pageant in 1989) it has registered hundreds of contestants. This year, 15 contestants, among them are Mr and Miss Teen Bohol 2009 beauties Maria Tiffany Tabigue Guldameer Malou Sombrio and Mygie Obrador, and a part-time model Bienna Ursula Bautista, competing in the grand finals slated on Saturday, July 18 at the Bohol Cultural Center.

Here is a list of interesting trivia and anecdote about the pageant:

• Fresh batch of sultry beauties were introduced in 1950s. The famed Miss Bohol winners were Paula Raagas Valles who became a mayor in Maribojoc; Delia Canda became Miss Visayas and she is now faithfully serving God as lay minister at St. Joseph Cathedral; Theoprolia Clarin from Sevilla and Geraldine Galang from Carmen, Reza Cabagnot from Tagbilaran City.

• Olivia Solis became Miss Bohol of 1957 from Panggangan, Calape, who later became a very popular lead actress in Visayan films. One of her movies was "Olivia." The theme song of that movie has the lyrics "Dawata na, Olivia" when the baby boomers generation can still remember. She later became a US resident, but returned to Philippines when her husband became a Cebu City councilor in the late 90s.

• In the 1980's, Rachelle Oculam was Miss Bohol from Lila.

• Marcel Gatal-Diego--A BS commerce major in management graduate from DWC-Tagbilaran, Miss Young Bohol 1983 and best in gown besting 34 beauty delegates from all over the province. She was also Hiyas ng Silangan-Bohol 1982 and was a top ten finalist in the 1982 Hiyas ng Silangan-Philippines pageant where she won the Miss Talent award. Marcel is the sibling of Bohol ’s seasoned host Raul and fashion icon Mikey who owns the www.mikeygatal.com. She is married to businessman Antonio Diego.

• Gemma Mandin, one of the Tagbilaran’s Five Prettiest, was crowned Miss Bohol in Dec. 1986. She was then an engineering student from San Carlos University when she joined the pageant. Now, Mandin is a flight stewardess of Philippine Airlines.

• There was no Miss Bohol 1987.

• Wenny Moreno Lim who represented Tagbilaran City made history as the first to get the crown in 1988. She is now residing in Cebu.

• Elizabeth Mumar Añana from Guindulman was the first to get the Miss Bohol Sandugo crown. The 1989 pageant was “shocking” as Añana was the only one wearing hi-cut suit which was “rare” at that time. Añana became the first Ms. Guindulman in 1989 and Ms. San Miguel Central Visayas 1989. She finished her BS in Business Administration from University of San Carlos and is currently the general manager of Symmetry Philippines, Inc.

• Jagna accomplished the first-ever “three feat” in the beauty pageant when the town’s entries successively triumphed from 1990-1992. Tiffany Yap, 1990, Ma. Recelle Adlaon-Paredes--1991 Miss Bohol Sandugo, a BS nursing graduate of DWC-Tagbilaran, she finished her M.A. in nursing at Cebu Normal University and is presently a clinical instructor of HNU-College of Nursing. Ma. Recelle Adlaon, 1991 and Celevel Ranoco, 1992. However, the 1990 pageant was one of the most dramatic when Marivic Labado, the crowd favorite was just a cinch to the crown. The first Boholano to become a Penshoppe model ended as first runner-up. Labado was Miss Cebu Doctors’ and she is now married to Dr. Larazabal, heir of the Cebu Doctors’.

• Miss Bohol Sandugo 1993 was Mary Ann Eronico from Talibon town.

• Vanessa Joyce Evardone was MBS 1994 and she is now working in Manila.

• Irah Noemi Naron was crowned MBS 1995 and she made it to the Mutya ng Pilipinas and received a special award. Here first runner-up and also Miss Talent was Shiela Sumalinog kept up Jagna’s string of impressive finishes in the search.

• Laianne Reyes Canoy was MBS 1996 from Maribojoc.

• Socorro D’ Mari “Tali” Inting from Tagbilaran City was MBS 1997. She started as Miss Divine High School, competed and won the Miss Divine and Miss Tagbilaran. To date, Tali is the only Miss Bohol Sandugo who has a remarkable record of all beauty queens who passed the bar exam. Her mother, Dra. Ma. Aida Tallo-Inting was crowned Miss Philippines Academy of Family Physicians 2000, and her uncle Dindo married Rosario Inting who was 1st RU to Fel Gabin, Miss Tagbilaran 1987.

• Josely Ferniz was MBS 1998. She got married and now a registered nurse.

• The MBS 1999 Maria Niña Cubello from Tubigon had not completed her reign who ended up marrying early. Cubello was replaced by Jennifer Ejoc of Catigbian.

• Mellanie Wallace, MBS 2000 from Tagbilaran City. The daughter of Vicky Wallace of the famous Bohol Bee Farm, she is a nurse in New York.

• MBS 2001 was Jenny Justiniane who didn’t complete her reign after marrying early. Vanessa Cadorno from Duero replaced Justiniane. To set the record, she was not “dethroned” by the organizers.

• MBS 2002 was Cherry Mae Bacarro. During her reign, she made it to the Bb. Pilipinas, but she represented Cagayan de Oro City (her sponsor) instead of Bohol. In July 2002, she was invited by the Bohol Sandugo Foundation to welcome the Miss Earth candidates in October 2002, but she failed to grace the activity “kay nagpaplantsa sa iyang buhok (because she was straightening her hair).” She came late to the place where everybody had left the place two hours before she arrived. Bacarro left an impression of neglecting the most responsibility for a very cheap or flimsy reason.

• MBS 2003 Fatima Liora Lloren Rana was from Jagna.

• Rhiz Novah Arenas was crowned Miss Bohol Sandugo 2004. She was famous of her line, “Basta ubi Bohol, basta Bohol ubi.”

• Anna Maris Igpit was crowned Miss Bohol Sandugo 2005. She was first runner-up in MBS 2004. She represented Bohol in the Bb. Pilipinas 2006 and was declared BB. PIlipinas-World. She competed in the Miss World 2006 pageant in Warsaw, Poland and was voted Poland ’s 5 Prettiest and Top 20 in the swimwear competition. So far, Maris is the only Boholana who made it in the prestigious international beauty pageant.

• There was Miss Bohol Sandugo in 2006 to give way to the Miss Bohol International beauty pageant. Again, there was no Miss Bohol Sandugo in 2007.

• Miss Catigbian Joy Marie Maglajos won the most-coveted Miss Bohol Sandugo 2008 crown. Joy is an airline cargo agent based in Cebu City.

Manny and Jinkee find peace, Chocolate Hills in Bohol

It was bonding for People’s Champ Manny Pacquiao and family in Bohol no less, far from stress and intrigues and the mind-blowing controversies.

The first choice was Boracay, then US. The Pacquiao’s au pairs (yayas) showed up with pieces of luggage and a whole entourage not in the US but at the island province of Bohol! Manny decided to pack their things and go to Bohol, for a family vacation to the surprise of everyone. The visit became historic as he set foot on Bohol soil, his first ever visit to the place who has “it all.”

Unexpectedly, Manny had to cut short his Bohol vacation to receive the "Fighter of the Year" award from a US-based sportswriters' group on June 12. Manny and Jinkee left the kids who were staying in a resort in Panglao with the au pairs (and some close-in “bodyguards”) promising them to come back after the US visit.

True enough, the couple upon arrival at the Manila International Airport from the United States on June 16, they took the 3 p.m. connecting PAL flight to Tagbilaran, excited to see again their children to rejoin them children in their interrupted vacation. At the tarmac of the Tagbilaran City Airport, Manny was welcomed with hugs and kisses from kids, Emmanuel, Jr., 8, Michael Stephen, 7 and Mary Divine Grace, 2, who were wearing “Bohol” t-shirts.

"They arrived looking like perfect. Even though it's a long flight from the US and Manila, Pacman looked best and Jinkee was stunning from the moment she stepped off the plane," an airport employee said.

The local folks who mobbed Manny were very delighted. Bakasyonistas at the resort asked for a souvenir photo with him and he was kind enough to pose though he looked tired and sleepy. Others asked for autographs. Manny signs his autograph with his right hand shows ability with both hands.

While Manny entertained the crowd, his kids were playing in the sand on the beach… and swimming. The kids had visited the tarsier and the Chocolate Hills. While their parents were out of the country, Ms. Arlaine Karaan acted as their “surrogate” mother making sure that the kids are safe and happy.

“Masaya….nung pumunta kami sa Chocolate Hills at yung tarsier palingun-lingon siya (Enjoyable… when we went to the Chocolate Hills and the tarsier turns its head)”, while moving his head to mimic the tarsier, “Ayaw magpapicture (It doesn’t want to be pictured),” Michael Stephen narrated.

But where’s Aling Dionisia (Manny's mom)—who is also gaining fame and wide for her natural charm and character—who was nowhere to be found? The yayas made “tsismis” that Aling Dionisia was in GenSan and she didn't know of the visit. She learned the vacation late. “Nagkisikisi pagkahibaw niya nga naa mi sa Bohol. Gusto niya makaari sa Bohol (She is very excited when she learned we’re in Bohol. She loves to come here),” one of the yaya's narrated.

Manny's interrupted first visit was spent only in a resort in Panglao (they moved to another resort, VRS said that Manny wasn’t satisfied of the resort’s services). But the second visit, however, was more relaxing. “First time kong nakapunta dito sa Bohol…. Grabe ang ganda. Puwede nating ipromote ang Bohol sa iba’t ibang bansa kung saan man ako magpunta, (This is my first time to visit Bohol…Very beautiful. I can help promote Bohol wherever I go),” Manny told Bared.

While media around the world continues to speculate on who Filipino boxing icon and “Hero of Asia” Manny Pacquiao will fight next, the world’s No.1 pound-for-pound fighter said that he has not yet known of his opponent.

“Wala pay final opponents. Walang final date kung kelan ang next fight ko...October or November... By the second week of July ko pa malalaman (No final opponents yet. There is no final date yet of my next fight. It is in the second week of July that I will find out),” he said.

Is it your last fight? Asking him while he’s making a high five sign to his fans. “Baka last fight ko na ang October or November (Maybe the October or November is my last fight),” he said.

How you make win of your fights? “Una-una siguro magtiwala sa Panginoon, sipag at tiyaga, displina sa sarili. Mahirap ang narating ko, sobtrang blessd lang ako ng Panginoon...tinulungan ako ng mahal na Panginoon (First is have faith to the Lord, work hard and self-discipline. I am blessed by the Lord… He helped me),” Manny shared.

And what a long way to go for someone who in his wildest dreams could not have imagined his fortune and fame will go this stretch. That is Manny Pacquiao--- and more!

Is it true you're running in 2010? “Nagdeklara na akong na tatakbo sa Saranggani... ang nais ko lang ay para makatulong sa kanila.....Mahirap isa-isahin kung ano ang naitulong ko, mahirap sabihin. Gusto kong matupad ang ambisyon ko na makatulong sa kanila at maging champion ako pagdating sa mga bagay na ganyan. (I declared it already that I will be running in Saranggani. I just want to help. I don’t want to count how many people I have helped…I just want to help them and a champion),” he emphasized.

The family was actually enjoying a bit of peace on their vacation, according to the resort who attended the needs of the Pacquiao. In fact, Manny had a sound sleep. He would wake up late in the morning.

The Pacquiao family also enjoyed a nice walk on the beach with their children on a powdery white sand beach on Bohol Beach Club. As the group walked, onlookers just sat and stared.

When the Pacquiao family was en route to the world famous Chocolate Hills, Michael Koncz (Manny's adviser) had to control the mob... a huge crowd immediately gathered around Pacquiao and his family.

● Congratulations to Atty. Kathy Blance “Anchie” Jumao-as Borja, CPA for placing 1st place in the Real Estate Brokers Licensure Examination given on May 31. Anchie graduated Bachelor of Science in Accountancy cum laude from the San Carlos University. ● DILG Sec. Ronnie Puno was here in Bohol last Friday as keynote speaker for the local governance support program for local economic development (LGSP-LED) MOA Signing. He was welcomed by the DILG family headed by Dame Rustica Mascariñas and local officials headed by Gov. Erico Aumentado and Vice Mayor Toto Veloso. Puno is widely known as one of the country’s most successful and reliable political strategists, but his extensive work experience of over 35 years also encompasses the fields of business, public relations, foreign diplomacy and public administration. He also reiterated that amending the Constitution before the 2010 elections is now virtually impossible even as he dismissed opposition claims of a no-elections or No-El scenario in 2010. He is planning to seek the nomination of the administrations parties as its vice presidential best in the 2010 polls. “Yes, I am going to make myself available for the Lakas-Kampi-CMD nomination for the vice presidency of the country. I'll be presenting myself for vice president” he told Bohol mediamen. He also praised the local officials of Bohol saying, “I want to congratulate everyone for the continuous programs of the province of Bohol.

Doy takes home a wife

Atty. Doy wanted the wedding to be as private as possible. But he didn’t get his wish. So last Saturday morning, June 6, when he exchanged “I dos” with Dra. Aileen at St. Joseph Cathedral, Tagbilaran City, the event couldn’t be anything but gathering of friends and relatives.

Doy’s parents Judge Pablo and Margie Magdoza were beaming with pride as they watched Doy take Aileen for his wife. Radiant in her Maximiel Tallo gown, all eyes were on the beautiful Dra. Aileen.

Years ago, Doy texted me if I was interested to interview Dra. Aileen who established a new derma clinic, unknowingly, he was already making “panguyab” to the lovely skin dermatologist. I had a busy schedule and there was no interview conducted.

The brand-new Mrs. Doy Magdoza was choked with emotion as she thanked everybody who attended the wedding.

Both in their early 30s and therefore ripe for marriage, the couple didn’t say where they would spend their honeymoon.

Love prevails and conquers all things.

SK Jagna federated president Lalaine Tan who is a subject of controversies (the SB Jagna want to “remove” her from office because of excessive absences) is not a student of Holy Name University as Bared reported last week. She is taking up Dentistry at Cebu Doctors University. Thanks to readers Joyce Garcia and Elizabeth Campbell for the correction.

SK provincial federated president Jane Censoria Cajes is a little “disappointed” of Jagna Councilor Senen Lloren (who said in a press release that an action from SK is a need on Tan’s case and the negative comments on the SK Bohol Youth Congress 2009 as commented by Tan’s SK members). “Thanks for the feedback. But how can we give action when there is no formal letter complaint given to the office?” Jane Censoria wondered.

Anyway, here is a letter from Jagna councilor Senen Lloren addressed to GM Mr. Peter Dajaresco as published verbatim:

Dear Sir:

Greetings!

In behalf of the 6th Sangguniang Bayan, we would like to clarify some issues on the column “BARED” by Mr. Leo P. Udtohan on June 7, 2009 page 8 of Bohol Chronicle about his comment specifically my name and Vice Mayor Pagar.

Personally, I have already a sad experiences with this particular writer much I consider him not an asset but a liability to your newspaper which will eventually you will lost a lot of prospective readers and clients.

Firstly, the complaint filed by the Sanggunian to Ombudsman Visayas against our SK Federated President Ms. Lalaine Tan is not done by only few SB Members but the consensus majority members of the Sanggunian. But before we moved to the Ombudsman we take steps to exhaust everything by providing Ms. Tan the necessary guidance and advices.

She reiterated in her privilege speech to acknowledge her lapses and appeal with us to help and guide her again because she promised to change but the next session she is absent again and successively absent again for she was not able to wake up early after attending a party the night before the session day.

Leo Udtohan reiterated in his column that Ms. Tan is experiencing psychological torture and low self-esteem, what about the 32 SK Chairpersons who lodged their complaints during our regular session last June 1, 2009 against Ms. Tan irresponsible and immature actuation as SK President. I think they too are experiencing psychological torture.

We directly filed the complaint to the Ombudsman because we do not want Ms. Tan to be just suspended by virtue of the SK Constitution and by Laws, there is a need to replace her because she already violated the Local Government Code by incurring huge numbers of absences in the Sanggunian and in the barangay level which is more than enough stated in the Local Gov’t Code.

We don’t really care if she is pregnant or not that is her personal choice in life but what is important to us is is only one thing – to protect the interest of the municipality and the Sangguniang Kabataan. We do not want the youth to be misrepresented or underrepresented and be left out. We cared for them to get involved and come up strong ideals and be able partner of progress in the municipality.
She should not regret to what happened because we gave her enough time for proper guidance and advices but all she cares is she never fails to collect her emoluments and other benefits as ex-officio member of the Sanggunian.

Her gross inefficiency and lack of interest to serve her constituents in the SB and in the Barangay Council and the habitual neglect or gross indifference to duty provide us with no choice and we cannot let it go any further. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH but to act properly even if it is painful for us to go against one of us in the Sanggunian.

Most of all, public service, cannot be held hostage to the whims and caprices of Ms. Lalaine Tan. The act of the Jagna 6th Sangguniang Bayan is simply to give a matured precedents to other LGU who has been experiencing the same fate with their SK President.

Lalaine Tan clears name

No, it is not true that she is no longer attending classes at Holy Name University. It is not true that she is pregnant. SK Jagna federated president dispelled all the rumors about her when she met Bared last week.

”This is the first time for me to finally speak up,” the misty-eyed Lalain said.

The nasty talks have been lingering sometime now. Lalaine kept mum about them until last week.

“I kept my silence for weeks hoping they (the talks) would die down. But they didn't.”

Of the allegation that she is pregnant, Lalaine denied it. And we know she's telling the truth. She knows people who have been spreading the ugly talks against her.

Lalaine is now facing a “complaint” at the Ombudsman Visayas filed by her colleagues at the Sangguniang Bayan of Jagna led by Vice Mayor Teofisto Pagar and Councilor Senen Lloren. The “meat” of the complaint is Lalaine's excessive absences during sessions.

The office of Jane Censoria Cajes has not received any formal letter complaint from the SB.

Years ago, SK Jagna federated president Dexter Ranis was suspended for months. It was part of the SK history that an official was suspended after the SK provincial office headed by Frances Bobbith Cajes-Auza conducted its own investigation and gave a sound judgment on the case.

If Lalaine is bound to experience the same fate like Dexter's, she is prepared, but “we should follow the law.” Dexter and Lalaine are said to be administration's allies though SK members are said no be nonpartisan.
The SB members should think of the aftermath of the complaint. Lalaine is perhaps experiencing psychological torture and low self-esteem (including humiliation) that would not be healthy for a teenager to experience. Remember that psychological torture is as damaging as physical torture.

Bared obtained a copy of her speech and this young lass humbly acknowledged her weaknesses and asked her colleagues to help and guide her instead. Then, what happened? Is it (the absences) too heavy to bear?

1st great-grandchild of Tirol clan celebrates 1st birthday

On June 3, 2008, a baby girl was born and has given her family joy and happiness. As much as she is loved by all, she deserves a party when she turns one! A year after, a party was celebrated for Athalia Jezka Karielle. “Babam” to all.

The Luau party was conceptualized by no less than Babam’s ever loving grandmothers: Leah Tirol-Magno and Dra. Mutya Kismet Tirol-Macuno, to be different from the usual 1st birthday parties. The party theme was Hawaiian and was held at the sea-side garden of the residence of the Macuno’s at the Tirol Compound at Cainget Beach drive.

Invites, party decorations, table centerpieces and foods were Hawaiian inspired. The venue entrance was decorated with balloons formed into Hawaiian figures. The children’s party will never by complete without the ice-cream cart and bouncy castle which were also provided by Sparkles. Loot bags printed with “Babam turns 1!” were personally sewn by grandma Leah. A big tarpaulin was also there for the guests to take pictures with a beach background and Babam in the Luau Outfit!

As the party organizers really opted not to have the usual mascots in the party, beautiful Hula girls wearing real grass skirts were instead made as icons of the party. They also greeted the guests who all came in Luau attire. The party was also made unique when the hosts opted to serve healthier non-cola drink options like: bottom-less iced tea, fruit shakes and fresh buko juice. Desserts were a choice of fresh fruits or chocolate-coated fresh fruits (courtesy of Dra. Golda Tirol-Olaivar). The beautiful Hawaiian design birthday cake was done by Ramirez Cakes & Pastries.

The children’s party attended by almost a hundred children was held earlier. Games were played such as pabitin, piñata, hot coconut and limbo rock prizes and other party activities were enjoyed by the children.

Before the dinner started, Babam wearing a Hawaiian costume made by Mamita Leah, blew her birthday cake candle after which the guests sang the traditional birthday song. What followed after the song surprised and awed everyone – a fireworks display by Wow! Fireworks.

Former Bohol governor Atty. David B. Tirol, Babam’s great-grand-father, delivered a message for family’s very special affair.

While the guests were enjoying the Hawaiian inspired dinner, a slideshow prepared by Mommy Am-am, of Babam’s first twelve months was shown. Pictures of Babam’s monthly pictorials by her Ninong Bim Canuto of Exquisite Pohotography was also highlighted.

The party’s host was VDT-ALC teacher Jack Amoguis. Singing champions Mylene Pedroso, Richie Mae Cruspero, and Babam’s cute auntie Illa Ursula Ramiro Tirol rendered beautiful songs. The guests were further entertained when the fire-zip dance was done by Tweng Dolotina, which really jived with the Hawaiian party theme.

Later after the some guests has left, Singing Bee star and aspiring Bohol governor Cesar Montano arrived to greet Babam. “Tito Buboy,” really came to fulfill his promise of attending Babam’s birthday.

Other noted visitors were Babam’s Ninong Mayor Jono Jumamoy of Inabanga, Board Member Mafe Camacho, Erin Yap and grandparents, John and Geesnell Yap, Sophia and Mommy Valerie Uy, Babam’s Ninang Aleli Yap and Tita Gwen Uy, Monique with parents Mario Magat and Cheryl Eastman, Charlene Chu and sons, Dominic Du with Parents Mr. and Mrs. Dominic Du, first cousin Mischa Ann Lim, Julia and Akaela Udtohan and Mommy Maan, the whole Tirol Clan, Graham Leopando Belarmino Tirol Church members, Ninong Bim Cañuto and the Exquisite Photography family and all family and friends who came and showed Babam their love.

Babam, who is the first great-grand-child of the prominent Tirol clan, is the daughter of Jozef Lionel “Tsino” Yap Lim and Amalia Karla Loise “Am-am” Tirol Magno.

The resort has received negative ratings at the internet from clients after the incident. Sayang, sayang!

Still a big question mark is the rumored feelings of Bien Unido Mayor Niño Rey “In-In” Boniel towards Sangguniang Kabataan national president Jane Censoria Cajes.

Mayor Boniel is falling head over heels for Jane, shall we believe? I could not blame if the dashing Mayor Boniel “likes” (decipher the quotation marks to feel the meaning) Jane. The young girl is now a catch —and now a fine (and a beautiful) lady!

Call it destiny. There were many times their roads and bridges did cross. However, the recent encounters were the most unforgettable. First, when Jane was invited to give an inspirational message to SK Bien Unido in Panglao, Mayor Boniel could not take away his eyes on Jane while Jane was giving her speech — and his heart pondered more— when Jane obliged for a photo souvenir with him.

The second “memorable” meeting was last Tuesday when Mayor Boniel went to SK office at the Capitol. Lips were asking if Mayor Boniel was courting Jane. It was learned that he came to follow up the assistance he’s asking from the SK.

Both are singles and have no relationships at present. Jane broke up with her boyfriend couple of months ago, while Mayor Boniel is looking for a relationship (Remember the song “Lonely is the man without love?”)

But he has this fear.

Confronted by Bared, the humble Mayor Boniel just said, “I have this fear of rejection.”

Geographically, Bien Unido and Trinidad are neighbors. And the lone road entrance to Bien Unido to land travel is Trinidad.

My “First pair of eyes that saw me” is dedicated to the woman I owe my life (next to my Mama Inday). Here’s a reprint of the story I wrote last year and I made some “slight” changes.

My mission was to search for this woman many years ago.

A little girl came out from the house and asked me my intention. I introduced and told the kid that I was looking for her granny. The kid said her granny was sleeping that noon time. I told the kid I would come back in the afternoon.

As I left the place, I was wondering how this woman looks like considering the many stories I heard from my Mama Inday and people who know her.

Until, I’ve met her in person.

She is Mrs.Catalina Reyes Calipayan, a retired midwife. Since time immemorial her name rings a bell to many moms in Tagbilaran City and even in many towns of Bohol.

When she told me that she’s 71 years old, I’d to blink, for it doesn’t show, as she can still be mistaken to be in her 60s—still healthy and contended, less wrinkles, In fact, she’s attending to the needs of the kids at her home.

Her sights are still clear and she talks well. She could still remember names and places. But her memories of how many children she helped see the world, she could not remember.

They’re thousands of children of those many years of selfless love and dedication to the calling of profession.

All children thrive on hearing—over and over again—how they came into this world, and I was no exception.

Our conversation led to sharing her experiences. I learned that she was born in Leyte and finished here degree at Cebu School of Midwifery.

But Mrs. Calipayan’s first choice was nursing. She remembered that the midwifery was the most difficult course then. There were rigid examinations before you’re admitted to college.

“There was a physical examination. If the enrollee had a child even if she was single she’s disqualified. There was a height requirement, you must be 5 feet tall and must have a pleasing personality,” she narrated.

The young Catalina had begun her career as a midwife after she finished schooling at the age of 18.

A midwife does more than just deliver babies because she is present at every birth, whether at home or in hospital. She touches everyone’s life.

“I always make sure that the mother and child are healthy and safe,” she said.

She narrated that in one day, she would helped three mothers to give birth.

A midwife is usually the first and main contact for the expectant mother during her pregnancy, and throughout labor and postnatal period. She helps mother to make informed choices about the services and options.

“The role of the midwife is very diverse,” she said. She carries out clinical examinations provides health and parent education and support the mother and her family throughout the childbearing proves to help them adjust to their parental role.

“I’d slept in many houses most especially when the labor of the mother had to take long hours. I’m there to give comfort because it’s painful,” said Mrs. Calipayan.

Safety is also a priority in midwifery and studies show that outcomes are the same as physician-attended births.

“Praise God, in my long years as a midwife all the children is alive. And when I hold the baby and heard her crying I’m so happy and blessed because there’s another miracle from heaven,” she enthusiastically said.

The positive and powerful attitude she has toward birth, specifically breech birth, is a reflection of her own entrance into this world. She always loved to take care of babies and have had the privilege of assisting in hundreds of breech homebirths.
Each time, she’s thankful to God and experience a calmness and assurance that comes from thinking back to her own birth memories.

“It’s a calling,” she happily said. I could sense that she had no regrets of being a midwife in her entire life.

“I pray to the Lord that everything would be fine..” and when the baby would come out, it was a relief, and I prayed, “Thank God, the child has life.”

Mrs. Calipayan is now retired but there are those who come to her house in Remolador street, this city to seek for her assistance. However, she politely told them she’s already retired from service and gave referrals where to go. She’s also busy attending to her five grandchildren from her children Chris Len, Mary Jean and Glinda.

Her hubby Graciano had passed away.

Mrs. Calipayan became president of the Integrated Midwives Association of the Philippines-Bohol chapter. She’s also an officer and adviser of the Philippine League of Government and Private Midwives in the region.

When I was about to leave her home, I asked her if she could remember Paulina Persigas Udtohan of Booy district.

“She’s very familiar,” she said thinking to remember everything.

And I told her that she’s my mother. And I told her that on May 25, my Mama Inday gave birth to a baby boy and she was the midwife who assisted during the labor.

But when I told her that I was that baby boy, she was surprised and hugged me. I saw in her eyes the joy upon seeing the baby boy had grown up.

“I am so thankful you’ve grown up,” she smiled.

I asked a friend to take a souvenir photo of us together. The woman whose first pair of eyes that lands sight on me.

We can learn a great deal about her life as a midwife, mother and wife. Her role in the society enriches, deepens, and complicates our understanding of everyday life.

I rejoice as I welcome this new chapter with joy. Life still has lots of amazing surprises in store for me.

Today, I pause for a moment to look back at the journey I have taken, and look forward to the wonderful possibilities tomorrow brings.

As I step towards the road that lies ahead, I remember the places I have been part of, people who inspired me to become better and wishes that were granted,, and life’s lessons learned along the way.

As I start another page, why not make this new beginning by taking stock of the blessings that surround me? My family, friends, career, and all those little things I am able to accomplish daily—these are reminders of the unique and beautiful life I have.

I couldn’t say a word how fortunate I am to meet and to thank the woman who helped my Mama Inday on May 25 two decades and eight years ago to see the light of this beautiful world.

• My visit to the northern part of Bohol has this scoop! A youth leader who works as a nurse was asked by leaders to run as mayor in the northern part of Bohol after the incumbent mayor failed to get the support from his vice mayor and councilors for the next year’s elections. They urged this youth leader to run because they believe that the youth leader is the only person who can crush down the mayor who’s getting richer, richer and fuller!

tears me up inside when I’m told I am bad. However, it is so funny when a person claims that s/he is the one in a blind item even if you’re not! And it’s so “degrading” when you “hunt” and “threat” the writer for believing a friend’s lies. For Pete’s sake, don’t react when you are not the one involved and you’re not sure it’s you…and if you’re not a who’s who.

• Could it be true that two good friends (“kasusyo” in business) are now parting ways under unpleasant circumstances? According to a Very Reliable Source (VRS), everything has been done to resolve the “issue” (where’s the money?) but it seems impossible to patch things up.

Our paper, The Bohol Chronicle, turns 55 years old!

The Bohol Chronicle has been a witness in the unfolding of our province’s history. As a chronicler of events and purveyor of information The Bohol Chronicle remains true to its mission of being a pillar of journalism for the benefit of the people.

The province takes pride in the distinction of The Bohol Chronicle as one of the respected newspapers in the country.

Monday morning was a “dilemma” when I was in elementary. Our grade five teacher, Mrs. Jesusa Servas, used The Bohol Chronicle in our class. In fact, we could not get inside the class if we didn’t have a news article copied from the newspaper. There were many times when Mrs. Servas unexpectedly asked us to report the news we’d copied.

Our school had not subscribed to The Bohol Chronicle though there were tons of tons of books and other educational materials from the Books for the Barrios in the USA because it is a Modern of Excellence School (MOE), however, we could not find a copy of the paper. To pass, what we did was to borrow the paper from the late Manny Oronan whose wife Mrs. Evelyn Oronan was a grade three teacher then.

Little did I know that our teacher used The Bohol Chronicle to instill lifelong love of reading.

Times passed, I had press release and news articles were printed in The Bohol Chronicle (I wish to compile them, if I have the luxury of time to dig the old archives, you know, for posterity). I even had the chance to meet the Chronicle founder the late lawyer Jun Dejaresco at his office.

The most unforgettable ( I hope you do remember!) article I’d contributed was the final episodes of the Rosalinda telenovela on June 4, 2000. I didn’t expect that the article would create “chaos” when it became a hot item in the radio gathering favorable and unfavorable comments from dyRD’s Tagbilaran By Nite and Inyong Alagad listeners the following day.

Years later…

My Manila trip last week despite the H1N1 fear allowed me to meet some balikbayans (who have duty free items for pasalubong) at the airport who’re homing to Bohol for the fiesta. Most of them are from the Middle East.

They enthusiastically shared their stories in foreign lands. I’ve had heard about success and painful stories of our OFWs and when they shared about an OFW, who is now a rising “star” in Middle East, that something and a great story.

The “rising” star they are referring to is a Boholano— Julius “Yuan” Galve— son of Aureliano and Julieta Galve of Mansasa District, Tagbilaran City is qualified for the final gala performance night on May 15 after placing 4th place in the second elimination round on April 30.

“He has a good voice and we love his performance,” shared a fan Hanna Sevilla, an OFW in Riyadh.

The Saudi Arabia Pop Icon is a singing competition for the Overseas Filipino Workers in Saudi Arabia organized by S.E.Productions (SEP), a recognized community service and cultural organization by the Philippine Embassy in Saudi Arabia. After the success of Pop Icon Season 1 in 2005 and the TFC POPSTAR in 2006, SEP brings back the POP ICON Season 2 which is now a kingdom-wide search.

Like a flash, Nonito “Junjun” Donaire, Jr. nicknamed The Filipino Flash (because of his speed and reflexes and the current IBF and IBO world champion in the flyweight category) was in Bohol Wednesday (no fanfare in city’s major thoroughfares) for a “vacation” together with his wife Rachel (nee Marcial), a Fil-Am taekwondo jin and some friends from the US.

The Bohol visit was Donaire’s promise to bring Rachel and friends for a Bohol trip after winning the bout against Raul Martinez and not a honeymoon (they got married on August 28, 2008 and they are still planning to have one if time permits).

Believe me, Donaire can be perfect guide. Touring around to some of our important landmarks, he knows the places and he has a story to tell. He took the group to Balicasag Island for diving. The group went to Hinagdanan Cave, Blood Compact Marker, Baclayon Church and Loboc River and tarsier seeing.

for our lunch. The extensive selection of tasty, native dishes positioned in the center of the raft makes for an extremely pleasant dining experience, which one can enjoy buffet-style for approximately P250 per person. Dishes usually offered are soup, grilled seafood such as squid, prawns and fish, and barbecued chicken, pork, and vegetables. For dessert, a variety of fresh fruits are available, as well as overflowing coffee and tea. While dining, a small group of singers serenade you with everything from folk songs to local pop songs.

Another reason that makes dining along the Loboc River so enjoyable though, is the breathtaking scenery that surrounds the raft. The lush greens all around the raft are captivating against a perfectly blue sky which adds tranquility to the ride. As the boat goes further upstream, one cannot help but notice that the river is full of life.

Somewhere in the middle of the cruise, there would be a stopover to see some talents of Loboc. Donaire had a good time dancing with the local folks. In fairness, he knows how to grind and he has a good voice.

He’s mobbed by fans, mostly boxing aficionados in every place he had visited even at the top of the Chocolate Hills.

He went to Talibon where he had a courtesy call with Mayor Juanario Item who gave her a Plaque of Excellence as the pride of Talibon.

I didn’t expect that his visit to Talibon became “emotional” and “memorable.” I became misty-eyed when Donaire unexpectedly visited Alejandro Gurrea Elem. School where he finished primary. He shared his first fist fight and how he brought guavas to sell it in school.

The more I cried when The Flash showed us the humble hut where he was born. Unlike other people who forget their “origin,” Donaire is not. He’s so proud to tell his life before he became a champ.

“Welcome to my house where I was born. In fact, I still have my umbilical cord inside to prove that I was born here,” he narrated while hugging his mom Imelda. He met his kababata and played basketball with them to reminisce his childhood days.

I asked the couple how many kids they wish to have, Donaire said, “The more the merrier for me.... so practice!” He laughed. However Rachel told me, “I don't know.... a minimum of four.”

It was a long day; however their Bohol visit was enjoyable and memorable. "It's fun... great. It is always better and better, especially your family and friends around you and you get to show how beautiful the Bohol and Philippines... Here you get to see nature, culture and how people live...,” Rachel said.

As a pride of Bohol, Donaire shared, “Bohol is a beautiful place... the people here are great. I was born here... during those times growing up here... I learned to appreciate life... I lived my life in poverty where sometimes food is not available... there were times it was rationed.... what it thought me is to appreciate life....of the hardships I went through.”

The Flash who is very humble will go a long way.

Thousands line up for PBB, PDA auditions in Bohol

Two friends who met in a foreign land have married after falling in love on the scenic Bangkok.

Cromwell Besmark Cortes and Michelle “Dane” Dalida were just good friends... until they decided to settle down for good on April 7, at three in the afternoon, at the Bongabong Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Oriental Mindoro. Another reception was held on April 14 at the Sandugo Ballroom of the Bohol Tropics Resort for the sake of other friends and relatives of the groom who weren’t able to attend the wedding in Mindoro.

Many of my high school friends have decided to get married — and Cromscort is the latest to do so after finding true love in Thailand. Cromscort --- the tallest in our batch and has the boyish charming smile (De Ers, mi amiga para vivir, called him a hunk) — is the youngest son of Salvador “Boy” Cortes and Prof. Bernardita Cortes (nee Castillo), the best English professor UB has ever had.

Currently Cromwell is an English teacher teaching high school and elementary in Thailand. He plans to proceed his law degree in the future, while Dane (daughter of Charney Ilacio and Vilma Turnino Dalida from Bongabong, Oriental Mindoro) is working as an English teacher in a private school in Thailand teaching Kindergarten. She plans to create and manage her own business
sometime in the future.

Dane says, “Before Crom and I became lovers I really believe that I could meet my ideal man. Things changed when I met Crom. I realized that I could only see the ideal man I'm looking for when you see yourself trusting and believing to the person you love and the one who loves you to the fullest. We went through lots of difficulties in our relationship but we could feel that we're becoming stronger than before. And now, I can't ask for more except thanking the Lord for thinking about me by giving me another gift of love...In Crom I have found...the greatest joy in my life.”

Cromwell was with his brother Jasper when he met Dane. He shares, “I was with Jasper when he introduced me to his group mates the Unceasing Cantica one Saturday afternoon, Dane was one of them. Though there were a lot of people in the group this quite petite girl with a beautiful face and carefree laugh intrigued me the most. We didn't click right away; we were just normal friends, though I could safely say I was attracted to Dane. It was in the end of May when we started texting and calling each other more often, we became good friends and it became constant when we call early in the morning and we read passages and verses almost every night.

Soon, we felt texting and calling wasn't enough, I was working on the suburbs of Bangkok while Dane was in the Metropolis. But as they say, love conquers all, and that includes the two- hour heavy traffic ride, sometimes I took the Sky Train just to beat the traffic and to have more time being with Dane. We found ourselves spending more time with each other, talking about just anything and soon I realized we didn't have much in common with our personalities which was more intriguing on my part, the more I knew Dane the more I was mistaken with all my first impressions on her and I knew she was something special. Indeed she was, I opened up my affections to her and I'm glad that she took it. Looking back, I can honestly say in His own time God has handed me a perfect gift that I would cherish and love for the rest of my life...my Dane.”

They plan to have their honeymoon in the timeless romantic Thailand where they first met.

Yes, they were part of the PBB and PDA auditions. Despite the roasting heat of the sun, more than 5,000 hopefuls have tried out for the special auditions of Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) Regular Edition, Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition and Pinoy Dream Academy (PDA) at the Island City Mall in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

Some hopefuls came as early as 5 a.m. and all of them came with stories of their life struggles. By 9 a.m., the crowd estimate was 3,000, and the number continued to
go up. By 11 a.m., the number of aspirants already reached 4,000.

There were 1,918 auditionees for the PBB Teen, PDA has 582 and PBB regular has 1, 671. The figure isn’t bad at all for a city like Tagbilaran, in fact, Manila has 10,000 auditionees while Cebu has 8,000.

The PBB auditions caused a monstrous traffic inside the mall. Fast food chains like Chowking, Jollibee, KFC, RaiRai Ken and Greenwich were crowded at lunchtime.

ICM, which gives a total shopping leisure for all Boholanos, was unanimously chosen by ABS-CBN executives. It has a spacious parking area and has good relations with the network.

The Bohol auditions were applauded. “No bad incident happened. Everything’s in order,” said AGC publicist Ariel Fullido (also of CenterStage band).

PBB director Laurenti Dyogi has spearheaded the auditions for PBB regular. People patiently waited for their turn to show their talents but very few were able to get in the audition area. The organizers have announced that the audition for Bohol was closed and begged for the public’s indulgence that the network will not anymore accept auditionees. The auditions finished Friday night at 11p.m.

The success of Pinoy Big Brother has an unwavering influence on the youth to dream big. Unbelievably, there were those who came from General Santos, Dumaguete City, Cebu City and Manila. Overwhelmed, I texted Maam Linggit Tan, PBB business head, informing her of the auditions resounding success, she replied, “Wow grabe! Thanks for the support.” On the other hand, Maru Benitez, one of the producers of PBB was happy to learn about the success of the auditions, saying “Good to hear that.”

At the end of the auditions, 56 Boholanos make it to the finals for the PBB regular and teen editions. These 56 Boholanos will be brought to Manila where they will be screened -- along with other finalists from Visayas and Luzon. This time, the 12 housemates will be chosen.

No results yet for how many were chosen for the PDA. ABS-CBN will give the official reports on Monday.

"We still don't know how many will be chosen from Bohol. Pwedeng wala. But I hope, even one can make it," a source from ABS-CBN said.

According to a Very Reliable Source (VRS), there were Boholanos who auditioned in Cebu on March 15 and there was one from Panglao who has the chance to become a housemate. Who is he/she?

While the city introduced this year’s Miss Tagbilaran with less fanfare (all eyes will be watching the pageant and coronation night on April 29, remember that previous shows were in little bad taste), the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation of Bohol headed by Jane Censoria Cajes has just launched their own contest they called Mr. and Miss Teen Bohol, with the grand finals slated on May 28 at the Bohol Cultural Center.

Beauty experts noticed that the Mr and Miss Teen Bohol is the answer to the meltdown of local beauty pageants in the province (Miss Tagbilaran and Miss Bohol Sandugo).

The winners will become ambassadors of goodwill, that is, to promote and honor youth, encourage personal growth and individual development and to promote Boholano culture and the engagement of positive cultural activities by young people.

Cajes is reminding us that “The search is not about a crown or a title, it is about service.”

Bamboo, Nikki Gil and the environment

Puro caña, puro amor!

I enjoyed the Bamboo concert years ago so I was expecting the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) environmental campaign with Bamboo and Nikki Gil would be a blast.

Pinoy rock band Bamboo, the group behind the hit songs Noypi, Tatsulok and Halleluia performed in a special concert, the biggest gathering of youth in Bohol exclusively presented by SK headed by its national president Jane Censoria Cajes.

While Bamboo was performing on stage, teenagers had tried to sing with the front man Francisco "Bamboo" Mañalac. The more than 6,000 warm bodies inside the Bohol Wisdom gym looked like a giant wave joining Bamboo singing Himala, Tatsulok, Elise, Noypi, Awit ng Kabataan, Don’t Wait for Tomorrow, Halleluia.

Halleluiah, indeed!

Lead vocalist Bamboo Mañalac, guitarist Ira Cruz, bassist Nathan Azarcon and drummer Vic Mercado expressed their support in songs.

Monica Pauline Santos Gil, popularly known as Nikki Gil, almost quit show biz because she suffered from burnout while juggling roles as a TV host, singer, actress and college student.

She graduated from Shekinah Christian Training Center in March 2004 as batch valedictorian. In 2009, she graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University majoring in English Literature.

In 2007, Gil did her first movie appearance by doing a cameo role as John Lloyd Cruz’s girlfriend for “One More Chance”. Currently, she is scheduled to appear in an upcoming movie by Star Cinema starring Vilma Santos, Luis Manzano and John Lloyd Cruz and in an upcoming independent film with Marvin Agustin.

Boom Reyes won the Miss Gay Philippines 2009. Boom Reyes, will be representing the country to the annual Miss International Queen in Thailand in October. There was no contest held last year though due to the worsening peace and order situation in Pattaya Thailand - where Tiffany and all the other Gay Beauty Pageants are being held.

The “A Faraway Life” tells the story of a Boholano who will choose the love of her live and her family and her adventure of marrying an American. The film stars Dra. • So far, here are folks said to be running in the 2010 elections: provincial board member Ma. Fe Camacho-Lejos is running as mayor against her nephew in Getafe; Frances Bobbith Cajes was asked by supporters to run as mayor in Talibon. During the visit of Pres. Macapagal-Arroyo on April 1 for the launching of SK’s Sama-sama para sa Kalikasan environmental project, Mrs. Arroyo had lunch with Gov. Erico Aumentado, Vic-Gov. Julius Caesar Herrera, Reps. Back to Bataan!

The Bataan Death March began as a plea for life. Men were tired, weak, and lacking food. The 70-mile march from Mariveles (on the tip of Bataan) to San Fernando was a trial that tested a man, broke him, or got him killed.

The famished men who made the exhausting march in World War II would never be forgotten. Bataan Death March- forced march of 70,000 Filipino and American prisoners of war captured by the Japanese in the Philippines during World War II.

Starting out from Mariveles, at the southern end of Bataan Peninsula, on April 9, 1942, these soldiers were forced-marched 88 km to San Fernando Pampanga, then taken by trail to Capas, from there they walked for the remaining 13 km to Camp O’Donnell.

They were tortured, starved and often kicked or beaten on their way. Those who fell were bayoneted. Around 7,000- 10,000 perished on the way while some were able to escape to the jungle. Only 54,000 reached the camp. After the war, the Japanese commander who led the invasion of the Philippines, Gen. Homma Masaharu was charged by the U.S. military commission in Manila on February 1946 as the one responsible for the death march. Convicted, he was executed on April 3.

Major General Edward P. King, Jr., USA, Commanding General, Luzon Forces, 1942 said: "Courage is a quality God has seen fit to dispense with utmost care. The men of Bataan were His chosen favorites."

Feliz compleaños

Pres. Macapagal-Arroyo was in Bohol on April 1 to grace the Sangguniang Kabataan National Federation directorate meeting. The gathering is anchored on the theme, “Sama Sama Para sa Kalikasan.”

Arroyo, who turned 61 on April 5, also took a few moments to blow the candles of the birthday cake prepared for her by SK national president Jane Censoria Cajes and the convention organizers in what appeared to be an advanced birthday gift to President.

Mrs. Arroyo blew the candles shortly after the convention participants sang for her the customary birthday song.

Over 6,000 members of SK from across the country yesterday pledged continued support to the ongoing campaign of government to protect the environment.

It’s Holy Week once again. Both Christian and superstitious traditions mix in
remembering the passion and death of Jesus Christ. As a nation that highly values religious traditions, Holy Week in the Philippines is celebrated in total solemnity.

Here’s a forwarded email from a reader (who requested anonymity) who shared this piece about the death of Jesus Christ. “This is so vivid, sad, and glorious at the same time. God bless all who take the time to read this explanation.”

At the age of 33, Jesus was condemned to the death penalty.

That was then the 'worst' death. Only the worst criminals could die like Jesus.

And with Jesus things were worse, because not all the criminals condemned to death could receive nails on their hands and feet.

Of course, nails... Big nails! Each was 15 x 20 cm long, with a point of 6 cm. Another point was sharp.

The nails were carved into the pulses, and not into the palms, as we are used to
hear. In the pulse, there's a tendon which extends to the shoulder, and when the nails were being hammered, that tendon broke, obliging Jesus to reinforce all the muscles of his back, so that he could breath as He was losing all the air from his lungs.

In this way, He was forced to support Himself onto the nail carved into his feet, which was bigger than those carved into his pulses, for both feet were carved together. And, as his feet could not endure for a long time without tearing, Jesus was forced to alternate that 'cycle' so that He could breath.

Jesus endured that reality over 3 hours.

Yes, over 3 hours! Long time, isn't it? A few minutes before He died, Jesus was not bleeding anymore.

He was simply pouring water from his cuts and holes.

When we imagine Him injured, we only picture Him with injuries, but it is not enough; His wounds were true holes, made into his body.

He had no more blood to bleed, He only poured water.

Human body is composed by near 3.5 liters of blood (for an adult).

Jesus poured out all 3.5 liters of his blood; He had three nails hammered into his members; a crown of thorns on his head and, beyond that, a Roman soldier who shoved a spear into his side.

All this without mentioning the humiliation He passed after carrying his own cross for almost 2 km, while the crowd spat on his face and threw stones (the cross was almost 30 kg of weight, only for its higher part, where his hands were nailed).

Jesus had to pass all this experience, so that you can have free access to God.

So that your sins could be 'washed' away. All of them, with no exception! Don't ignore this situation. He died for you!! For you, who now read this e-mail. Do not believe that He only died for others (those who go to the church or for pastors, bishops, etc).

He died for you! It is easy to pass jokes or foolish photos by e-mail, but when it comes to God, sometimes you feel ashamed to forward to others because you are worried on what they may think about your moral.

Accept the reality, the truth that Jesus is the only salvation for the world.

God has plans for you, show all your friends what He experienced to save you. Now think on this! May God bless your life!

March 28 (8:30 p.m. in local time wherever you live on planet earth) was Earth Hour. The whole world joined Earth Hour, an annual international event created by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature/World Wildlife Fund), held on the last Saturday of March, that asks households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change.

What did you do?

Nowadays there is growing concern about the environment. New laws on the global, national, and state level aim at keeping our environment safe for us and future generations.

We live in a modern world with many necessary industries and processes, but that doesn't mean we have to accept the levels of pollution we currently have. We're affecting climate change much faster than the natural rate and that means problems will manifest themselves much faster than we can cope with them.

There is much that can be done by individuals too.

And our youth are united once more to protect and preserve our environment…. whether it's land, water or air; our environment is a precious resource that has a huge impact on our health.

There is no doubt that Jane Censoria Cajes —one of the prettiest faces — and among the few truly talented youth — can lead. Ask President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Unlike other young leaders, for instance, a youth leader (whose integrity is questionable) claimed many times that the President knows this leader but we found it’s fake!), Jane is not pretentious.

She has his father’s kind eyes and her mother’s dazzling smile. This young girl seems to be kind of girl every parents would dream of for their daughter. Following her father’s footsteps was the most natural thing to do for this charming 19 year old lady Jane who is in second year AB European studies at the Ateneo.

On April 1, Jane will lead the launching of the “Sama-Sama para sa Kalikasan,” a national environmental campaign.

Jane’s heroic act to mobilize the youth— just like environment activists ChinChin Gutierrez and Zenaida Darunday — to take care of the environment is a selfless act. They are the “diwatas” or nymph or forest fairies of our time.

Protection of the environment is championed by witches and wiccans. If you are reading Wiccan books, you will discover that witches are protectors of the environment because they believe that Mother Goddess is part of Mother Nature. In our folklore, we are told of diwatas like Maria Makiling, sometimes spelled Mariang Makiling of Laguna, Maria Sinukuan of Pampanga's Mount Arayat and Maria Cacao of Cebu's Mount Lantoy (and Maria Gebarte of Bohol), they are guardians of the mountain, responsible for protecting its bounty and thus, they are also benefactors for the townspeople who depend on the mountain's resources.

Another modern day “diwata” is Prinsesa Analiza who lives at the top of Ilijan Hill in Tubigon, Bohol, a protected municipal park of flora and fauna. The princess and her daughter Batong Orange are guardians of the hill. And no one dares to “destroy” the place or else…

Our health is directly linked to the health of our earth! The time is NOW to educate ourselves and our children about taking care of our environment.

Water conservation. Here are simple ways to conserve this precious resource:
•According to Earth Save, not eating just one pound (less than half a kilogram) of beef per year will save more water than not showering for six months.

Energy saving. Don’t stay in the dark about energy saving. Be an energy saver! Use shade techniques to save up to 40% on cooling costs during warmer months.

Strategically placing trees and using outdoor shades on windows is one of the most effective ways of reducing household energy consumption.
•During cooler months, closing your curtains or blinds at night and opening them up during the day can help maintain heat and reduce your household heating costs.
•Insulate your home and save 25% on home heating bills.
•Turn off the lights when you leave the room.
•Turn off TV's, computers, radios and other household appliances when you have finished using them.
Modify your car usage:
•According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, the most important things you can do to help the environment are to drive a fuel efficient car and live close to your work.
•Do as many of your errands at one time so that you make fewer car trips. Cars pollute the most right after a cold start.
•Save approximately 10% on your annual fuel bill by keeping your car tuned and the tyres inflated.
•Walk or ride your bike to work or the shops.
•Car pool with school mates or work colleagues.

Organics. Good for you and the planet loves it also. Buy organic! The US EPA considers 60% of all herbicides, 90% of all fungicides and 30% of all pesticides to be cancer causing. As well as causing cancer, pesticides are implicated in birth defects, nerve damage and genetic mutation.

Other ways you can be an environmental hero:
•Don't buy products made from endangered plants and animals. You will help preserve nature.
•When you go shopping, take a re-usable bag with you instead of accepting plastic bags. Canvas bags are ideal as they are light and very sturdy.
•If you have to use paper or plastic bags, make sure you save them and re-use them as often as possible.
•Try to support businesses who take their environmental responsibilities seriously, by buying their products and services over other businesses.
•Participate in neighbourhood clean-ups.
•Be an active citizen and write to government representatives encouraging them to work harder at protecting the environment.

Kibitzers felt something "fishy" of their sudden “disappearance” when they learned that Greta's rumored "boyfriend" Dodi Puno was with them (the resort's staff and the airport personnel confessed they saw Dodi and paid the resort’s bill to the tune of US$4,000 per nite!). The trio were here in Bohol for a “healing process”— Greta had an LQ with Tony Boy Cuangco and Pepay broke up with Jomari Yllana. On the other hand, Paolo Contis and his girlfriend EB Babe Lian Paz were caught by our lens unaware — enjoying what they thought were ‘stolen moments’ at a beach in Panglao, Bohol (the same resort where Greta, Pepay and Bebe, including other showbiz personalities Kris Aquino and Claudine Barretto were staying). Another star Derek Ramsey and girlfriend Angelica Panganiban were spotted in a romantic overnight stay in Bohol beach last Friday.

• A “Boholana” was crowned in the biggest and most prestigious gay pageant in the country. Boom Reyes (who hails from the northern part of Bohol) outshined other 22 contestants in the 30th year anniversary of the Miss Gay Philippines staged at the Music Museum on March 17. The event was first held in 1980 by its founder-producer Chito Alcid (a showbiz personality who is presently hosting “Chito Alcid Talk Show”). The first batch of judges then were Susan Roces, Gloria Diaz, Joji Felix Velarde, Chona Recto Kasten, Eddie Garcia, Tingting Cojuangco, Criselda Lontok Fernandez, Jessie Ejercito and Josephine Estrada. There were five major titles during the pageant: Miss GP Universe, Miss GP World, Miss GP Earth, Miss GP International and Miss GP Asia Pacific. They received thousands of pesos each, trophies and gifts from sponsors. Reyes will represent the country in the Queen International in Thailand. Famous celebrities and movie stars who graced the celebration were Miss Earth Karla Henry, Miss World Evangeline Pascual and Alma Concepcion.

Nothing ever ruffles her, not the family background nor the way many people kind of ignored her when Rebecca Lusterio, Bikay for short, graduated from being a child superstar and slipped into a Masscom student at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Manila.

Despite juicy offers from showbiz—and how a “friend” failed to give her a break though she made three films and made her a star—Bikay chose to finish her studies.

She has to graduate March next year, a scholar.

Bikay went back to her native Bohol not for a “short” vacation but to shoot a documentary for Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Manila annual public exhibition of TV documentaries called “Sulyap” as part of her final requirement for their TV Production subject.

As the writer and director the team (the PAGI-Something Fishy Productions) together with Mark Andrew Villanueva (cameraman and creative director), Maureen Garferio (musical scorer and production assistant) and Katherine Talaboc (production manager) they stayed for five days on Alona Beach.

Bikay’s parents, Verano and Helen, became the team’s surrogate parents. Verano has his banca for dolphin watching and Balicasag diving, while Helen is still selling seashells on the famous Alona Beach , a long stretch of white sand subdivided into many resorts. This place also happens to be where Bikay plied her wares of shells and fancy jewelry when she was young.

The team visited Pamilacan Island , the breeding place of the manta rays and stingrays. Stingrays used to flourish in the ocean but now they are becoming an endangered species. They discovered how local folks haunt them for food and most pagis are sold in Baclayon, especially on Wednesdays, the town’s Markey day.

The stingrays are a family of Dasyatidae of rays, cartilaginous fishes related to sharks. They are common in coastal tropical marine waters throughout the world, and several species are known to enter fresh water.

“They look like angels gracefully dancing under the sea. They don’t look harmful,” said Bikay.

Divers often refer to them as "Sea Devils." Stingrays may also be called the "whip-tailed rays" though this usage is much less common. It can be noted that TV personality Steve Irwin was pierced in the chest by a stingray barb while snorkeling in Australia and died shortly after on September 4, 2006.

Bikay and her team went diving in Pamilacan and Balicasag, hailed as one of the best dive spots in the world to look for stingrays and the team failed to find one.

“We could not find a single stingray. We believe they are becoming extinct,” concluded Bikay.

Letran’s “Sulyap” which was held on March 12 at the SC Auditorium with the special screening of Che-che Lazaro, one of the best documentarists in the country had 14 entries. And Bikay’s documentary on pagi was well-applauded by the Letran students and professors.

“Our documentary "Pagi" tackled about the near extinction of stingrays. Stingrays are truly nature’s treasure and because of man’s abusive practices, they are now considered endangered species…do we deal with this problem when it is too late? It’s a pity if the next generation could not see this great treasure alive,” said Bikay.

Bikay who won Best Child Performer in Muro-Ami and important roles in other Cesar Montano films – Panaghoy sa Suba (which she won Best Supporting Actress) and Ligalig won't be home this summer---she will be busy for her on-job training in one of the networks.

The most heartfelt message came from the newlyweds. Sandy clearly elated by everyone’s kindness, repeatedly expressed her gratitude to all as Jojo steadied her with the first of woman’s reassuring embraces.

The couple was toasted with a warm welcome into both families.

The event also served as “reunion” among Sandy’s classmates in high school.

Well, the Bb. Pilipinas 2009 came to an end on March 7 at the Big Dome and our very own Rich Asuncion, the 2007 StarStruck: The Next Level Second Princess failed in her quest to get one of the crowns in the Binibining Pilipinas 2009 pageant. Instead, she settled for the first runner up position when her name was announced, after second runner up winner Regina Hahn’s name was called.

Rich is the third Boholana who made it to the country’s most prestigious beauty pageant. Other Boholana winners were Perla Fernando Salig (now Mrs. Teves) from Loboc who was Bb. Pilipinas 1979 first runner-up and Anna Maris Igpit from Panglao who was Bb. Pilipinas-World 2006.

Rich’s inclusion in the dossier of beauty queens from Bohol in the Bb. Pilipinas is a manifestation that Boholanas are truly beautiful and gifted.

Had she answered well, Rich might just have one of the crowns. She seemed to fumble at the question and answer portion as she struggled to give a clear and composed answer of one of the pageant's judges visual artist Betsy Westerndorp's: "What is your lucky number and what is its significance to you?"

She said her lucky number is 11 because it was the month of the year when she first fell in love.

Her answer was a little bit “disappointing” though other candidates and winners seemed to fumble at the question and answer portion. And internet forums like missosology.com got flooded comments from beauty fanatics. Her fans came to the rescue while other people are criticizing Rich’s performance.

“I understand your sentiments...that's where your " I actually think " was derived from......we have to be objective my dear...based on their performance Rich did shine...more than the others, she may not be ready for a crown yet....but her efforts deserved her placemen,” wrote “Guybeauty.”

“Ambivalent_203” said, “from all appearances, rich is pageant-ready. Mantakin mong ala Elisa Najera of Mexico ang rampa nya. She can fill any vacancy anytime. The girl is angel-looking but with a very fierce attitude and a good communicator too.”

The fate of Rich--- joining the pageant using her real name, Richelle Angalot---was a lot better than those of co-Kapuso artist Abegail Lesley Cruz and PBB Teen Edition Plus alumna Priscilla Navidad. Both did not even make it to the Top 10 roster.

Abegail did much better in 2007 when she won the second runner-up title, while Priscilla failed on her first attempt for a crown in the country’s most popular beauty pageant.

Ynell Lumantao who is based in Korea commented: “Not so bad. Her pronunciation is good maybe because she was tensed.”

“I’m happy for rich because I was her handler during the Miss Bohol International and I told her bigger things are in store for her and it came true,” said Bohol’s seasoned host and lifestyle guru Raul Gatal.

Rich successfully earned the nods of the judges and some the event's sponsors bagging several special awards, such as Miss Natasha Beauty, Miss Talent, and Araneta Center Shoppers' Choice Award.

Crowned Binibining Pilipinas 2009 winners were: Melody Gersbach, Binibining Pilipinas-International; Pamela Bianca Manalo, Binibining Pilipinas-Universe and Marie-Ann Umali, Bb. Pilipinas World. Regina is the daughter of the Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 1975 and Miss Universe 4th runner up Chiqui Brosas

The other judges for the pageant that night were Columbian businessman Arturo Marquez, PBA MVP Mark Cardona, Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila General Manager Bernd Schneider, Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez, Brazilian Ambassador Alcides Prates, Pakistan Ambassador Muhammad Naeem Khan, and former Ms. Universe Gloria Diaz.

Sitting as chairman of the Board of Judges was Supreme Court Chief Justice Artemio Panganiban.

Legendary fashion designer Jose "Pitoy" Moreno, Gloria Diaz (Miss Universe 1969), Margie Moran (Miss Universe 1973) and Aurora Pijuan were honored with recognition by the Bb. Pilipinas Charities, Inc., for their achievements that have made the Philippines proud.

Special guests that evening were Aljur Abrenica, JC Tiuseco, Dingdong Dantes and the PMA Choir. The event was hosted by Paolo Bediones and Iza Calzado.

“Will,” on the other hand, commented saying “As for Rich, way to go! You deserve your placement. Not just a handful saw how you prepared and competed. Smile sweetie, you should be on top of the world.”

To those who criticize Rich, here’s her message: “Let us have to look at the brighter side…at least I got it to the semi-final.”

Alekcis Balista reinvents himself

Basic facts about Alekcis Balista:
• He stands 5'6" and weighs 67kg.
• He’s an Aquarian ( February 12, 1986)
• He was a former lead vocalist of H2O band (he has also been involved in other musical projects).
• He’s married (sorry, girls) to Rassel Mae!

When the voice tells the story, it reveals much more than just words. Its texture, feel, tone, color, personality reveal a story behind the narrative.

A good voice brings out the best of what is said with it. Such is the case of Alekcis Geral M. Balista.

Correct me, if I’m wrong, but no other vocalist in the province can surpass the popularity of Alekcis—he has captured a wide audience breaking all barriers between market classes and any music genre. He started out singing in folkhouses and he joined several bands (Moshpit, Suitcase101, H2O band) before finally settling down with System Tools and Marswalk (a side project band).

Alekcis is synonymous with H2O band. A heartthrob, his fans (including mi amiga para
vivir De Ders!) came to the venue just to see him performing. In a sudden turned of events, he left the band and moved to Manila for some reasons. As he came back to Bohol, he united with former friend Mark Apat (former H2O leader on drums) and formed the all-male band System Tools which is slowly craving a niche for their brand of music in the province. System Tools creates music that holds its own ground amidst the buffet of present-day rock and alternatives. Alekcis’s rich voice permeates and grabs you. But what make the songs shine all the more is his honesty; honesty not only of feelings, but of his individual styles who is given his own creative space in the band.

There are lot of new things in Alekcis’ s life, including a new band and his marriage to the woman of his life—Rassel Mae (they became one on Sept. 25, 2003).

When I asked him “what song he likes to sing for his wife,” he could think only of Beautiful in My Eyes (by Kadison Joshua, Jerico Rosales and Christian Bautista have their own versions--LPU).

While not busy performing in gigs and at home tendering his wife and kid, Alekcis

The Mayonnaise Jar and 2 Cups of Coffee

Here’s a forwarded email from Pureza Chatto, wife of Rep. Edgar Chatto. I want to share this to all readers out there.

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle; when 24 hours in a day are not enough;
remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee...

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.

When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly.
The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous "yes."

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand.

The students laughed.

"Now," said the professor as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.

The golf balls are the important things --your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions--- and if everything else was lost and only they remained; your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter; like your job, your house and your car.

The sand is everything else---the small stuff. "If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued,
"there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.

The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

"Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.

Let’s congratulate the very charming Carmen Camille “Menchie” G. Logarta who had all the reasons to be excited about her debut last Feb. 15, which was held at the Heritage Center, The Assumption Our Lady Convent Rectory Courtyard in Poblacion, Dauis (a perfect for fine dining, debuts and parties!).

Even her classmates at the Cebu Doctors' University in Cebu City (Menchie is taking
up Bachelor of Science in Nursing), expected it to be the biggest day for Menchie.

Her mom, Fe Lograta (nee Galgao), spent weeks making sure everything was perfect.

Menchie missed her dad, Carmen “Menchu” Logarta, on the very special occasion of her life.

The vibrant debutante changed costumes thrice during the event. Menchie’s red gowns were designed by Cebu fashion designer Wendell Quisido of Wendell Quisido Boutique in Lahug, Cebu City. She also wore an elegant black gown designed by EJ Relampagos.

Menchie graciously welcomed friends and special guests to the fabulous celebration.

The event was made more memorable with the presence of Menchie’s grandma, Dean Jesusa Corazon Jamero vda Logarta (Menchie was so happy that her lola who was not feeling well at that time made it to the debut--LPU) and some personalities such as Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bompat, Dr. and Dra. Minilo Timaan and Mr. and Mrs. Gerard Logarta.

It was some three months ago when Menchie’s mother made her decide once and for all what it was she wanted for her 18th birthday. For Menchie, the “party was the best gift of my mom.”

Menchie wants to become a fashion designer; however she needs to finish nursing first. She shares, “I like what Sir Winston Churchill said it is not enough that we do our best; sometimes we have to do what is required.”

When seasoned host Raul Gatal announced the start of the proceedings all jumped into place, ready for their grand entrance.

Following tradition, 18 gentlemen and 18 ladies offered roses and candles to the debutante …And there was Menchie tracing her steps to the center of the venue.

Everyone’s attention was on her. Menchie was all smiles, acknowledging the welcome applause.

It was indeed a memorable night, one that went on past midnight with Menchie and her friends taking over the dance floor. Mama Fe and Lola Corazon could only sigh in relief as they were watching the visitors dancing the night away—and watching daughter Menchie marked a milestone in her life.

Mama Fe said, “I love you very much and thank the Lord for the gift of you. Not only are you my only daughter, but now that you are grown, you have become the best friend of my heart as well.”

• Could it be true that some provincial board members have the sticker “Official Use Only” removed from their official vehicles? An unimpeachable Very Reliable Source (VRS) relayed this “scoop” when she saw the vehicles no longer have with the official sticker. “They want to have the government vehicles as their own,” VRS said.

• Could it be true that a Boholana nurse from Tagbilaran City is in “hot water” after she allegedly left an old woman with broken arms for four days in New Zealand in 2007? The incident was published last week and the talk of the town there. The old woman died in 2008 and she was terminated from the company after “the Human Rights Review Tribunal investigated and found she failed to maintain proper standards of care and professionalism.”

It’s confirmed: The ABS-CBN’s reality-based show Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) for its third season and Teen Edition 3 will have its audition on Bohol on April 17 (the venue is to be known— yet) according to ABS-CBN Production Development and Control Head and one of PBB’s business unit heads Linggit Tan in a text message she relayed to Bared.

Most auditions for TV reality shows are held in big cities like Cebu, Iloilo and Davao; however ABS-CBN decided to include Bohol in their list.

“We want to go to places where we have not had auditions before to give more people a chance to join,” said Linggit on Thursday.

Linggit and I met years ago when she was a producer of ABS-CBN’s defunct show MTB Ang Saya Saya. She was in Bohol for the live telecast of MTV Ang Saya Saya at Bohol Beach Club (one of the show’s hosts AiAi de las Alas was “harassed” — and Bohol that time was at peaked of its promotion as a tourist destination).

Back to our story, the PBB Season 3 audition is “highly” requested by the ABS-CBN Regional Network Group to hold a special audition in Bohol, according to Maru Benitez, the PBB production manager in a phone interview.

The qualifications are: “you must be Filipino or have at least some Filipino blood
in you, and must meet the age requirement.”

For PBB Season 3, from 19 to 35 years old and for PBB Teen Edition Season 3, from 14 to 17 years of age. So bring your NSO Authenticated Birth Certificates with you. Be sure to bring in also a biodata and your best pictures! You could also try to bring in your videos and other stuff that could catch the attention of the judges.

Remember the key is to stand out! It wouldn’t hurt if you also bring your Body of Work Portfolio for those who are already in the business but is yet to carve a name in the business. This is a good idea rather than wait for the Private Go-See, if you are already a model or an aspiring actor/actress. The judges will be impressed that you went through the rigors of a public audition. For all aspiring housemates, if you don’t meet the qualifications, you could at least try and see if they can relax the rules for you. Who knows, your good looks or great body (or even better, both!) could save you from the hassles of the age requirements.

The venue is to be determined sooner though there are sources from Cebu that it will be held at the Island City Mall.

“Interested participants should watch ABS-CBN for further announcement,” Benitez added.

After the two (2) seasons of Pinoy Big Brother, the mysterious voice of "Kuya" will be heard again soon. Who will the next Boholano to enter Bahay ni Kuya? Who is ready to face Big Brother’s challenges—No TV. No radio. No newspapers. No telephones.

Kris Aquino’s recent trip on Bohol

Here’s an article about actress and Queen of Talk Kris Aquino who shares what happened on her birthday trip to Bohol:

“It’s really beautiful kasi sobrang beautiful ng Bohol. We went to Panglao. We stayed in Eskaya and ang beautiful kasi we did everything. Lahat ng Lubok river, ‘yung magla-lunch ka tapos kakantahan ka? Tapos siyempre ‘yung dalawnag anak ko ayaw magpatalo. Nakisayaw sa kanila. Kasi hanggang Boom Tarat pa lang sila. Wala silang Giling-Giling. Pero meron talaga silang medley of songs so join sila. Naki-dance doon and then after the Loboc river we went to the tarsier.”

Natuwa rin daw ng todo si Baby James sa mga Tarsier at na-amaze naman si Kris sa man-made forest doon. “He wanted to grab it (tarsier) and bring it with us. I said, ‘No, you cannot touch.’ Tapos we went to Chocolate Hills. Pero going to Chocolate Hills mas na-impress ako doon sa man-made forest. Kasi parang ‘di ba feeling mo maraming area doon ang nakalbo na iniwan ng mga illegal loggers? Doon talaga million ‘yung trees. Talagang mapi-feel mo na pwede palang mangyari ito sa Philippines, na pwede nating alagaan ang kalikasan. Amazing! And then after that ‘yung Chocolate Hills punung-puno rin ng puno. So, talagang masasabi mo ang ganda-ganda at iba ‘yung hangin. It was just so fresh and everywhere you look ni isang wrapper wala ka’ng makikita. Sana ganu’n din dito. Kasi ganu’n ka-conscious, e. Ganu’n ka-consicous ang mga tao about keeping the place clean and they are so proud of it. And then after the tarsier I went to Baclayon church, Fiest of the Assumption church, Immaculate Concepcion church and then the Cathedral. Lahat napuntahan namin. ‘Yung mga church from the 1600,1700, napuntahan namin. Ang galing!”

Parang ang daming napuntahan nina Kris kaya’t tinanong naming kung gaano nga ba kalaki ang Bohol. “Small lang. Hindi ganu’n kalaki. Pero parang malaki rin naman kasi it takes two hours to get to the othe area. And ang ganda-ganda ng mga ano daan. Kasi prinayoritize raw ng national government. Walang lubak at all! Then after that we went, so, that was day one. Tapos nu’ng day two si Claudine (Barretto) sabi niya you have to wake up. So, sabi ko okey. Kasi she went there nu’ng Christmas break. Tapos siya ‘yung nagsabi talaga, siya ‘yung kumausap sa mga owner para bigyan kami ng discount. Dahil na-friend na niya. She really insisted, sabi niya, ‘You really have to go. Wake up.’ So, 5AM of my birthday, gumising kami. Nag-boating kami to go watch the dolpbhins. Forty-five minutes ka sasakay nu’ng pump boat. Tapos hanggang sa sine-serve ka ng coffee and pastries. Tapos dadating ka doon mga ano siguro, mga more than a dozen dolphins or swimming beside you. Jumpyty-jump silang ganu’n. But they’re not like Flipper na silver? Black (sila). Iba ‘yung color. Kasi raw si Bea Zobel, ‘yung daughter, is so active in revitalizing it. So, ang galing! ‘Di ba kapag ang mga madre nagluluto ‘di ba parang masarap. So, ‘yung mga madre raw ang nagbi-bake. Parang sa Good Shephered (Baguio), Bohol chapter. May bread carrot muffins, banana muffins, salabat.”

Ano ang ginawa nila ni James nu’ng Valentine’s day? “Iba-ibang church. Super tour ng tour ng church. Tapos we went to the Honeybee farm. We went to that café. Tapos nu’ng gabi, I don’t know if they jjust arranged it for me. I’m not sure, ha. Kasi biglang ‘yung Lubok children’s choir, they sang. Mga one hour ‘yung performance nila. It was so nice. Tapos they had almost 20 minutes na fireworks. Sabi ko, ‘Ahhh!’ Na-amaze kami talaga. Ang ganda-ganda! ‘Yung kids pala eight years old nagi-start. Tapos ‘pag 13 out ka na. New batch naman. Ang galing.” Nabigay na ni Kris ang Valentine and at the same time birhtday gift niya kay James na isang mamahaling Swiss watch. Nakatipid daw si Kris sa pagbili ng regalo niya kay James dahil binigyan siya ng discount. “Me naman, wala pa ‘yung gift niya sa akin. Hindi pa dumadating. Naka-order pa. I asked for a new laptop kaya lang ‘yung bagong version will be out first week of March. Na-delay,” tapos ni Kris.

Cong. Adam Relson Jala to lead guests, Steve Carosus will be the ‘officiating priest’ and Raul Gatal will be the wedding host

Surprise, surprise! Fabulous and classy socialite, handler and travel consultant Kenneth “Mizken” Tirol Andan is getting married. Yes! This piece of information is shared by a Bared reader (who also sent some undated pictures) with a message “It’s about time that Mizken is able to talk about his plan freely and his partner Alvie Torillo Gonzales!”

The soon-to-be-couple will exchange “I do’s” (but they call it “ring vows”) on March 22, 2009 (Sunday) at the Harbor View, Bohol Tropics Resort, this city.

“Everything is ready. They have already paid for the place and the guests are informed already,” the “anonymous” sender said.

On the other hand, “Cong. Adam Relson Jala and other friends are definitely invited to the wedding,” a friend, who is close to the couple, squeals. “Mizken wants Steve Carosus to be the minister. Steve was also the officiating minister to the wedding of Blaire and Patrick in Panglao.”

Mizken and Alvie have been going out for quite some time, and when Mizken (then
choked back tears of joy) announced the news that he’s getting married to his friends, they cheered wildly. Whatever, if any, controversy this creates, Mizken is used to it. Mizken famously "came out" after a promising singing and acting career on ABS-CBN when he was a teen and has been as open as anyone about being gay since then in Bohol.

Earlier, Mizken told friends he was "thrilled" about tying the knot. He’s so excited
and emotional now. He can’t imagine how that's going to be and they want it to be memorable.

"We are happy for them…Di bah we all deserve the same rights?" a friend said.

The invited guests and luminaries (yes, friends of the couple to be) who will give their inspirational speeches are Cong. Adam Jala, Jerber Mercado, Dr. Aileen Tan, Dennis Du, Loida Lagonoy, fashion icons EJ Relampagos, Maximiel Tallo, Henry Baron, Jan Del Valle, Baba yap, Ron Tan, Eric Ngo, Cathy Remperas, LJ Lumayag, Lalaine Husain, couple Jimabel Magallo-Ramirez and Geraldine Ramirez and Leizl Lim Gregorio.

Raul Gatal will be the master of ceremony, while Steve Carosus will be the officiating priest/minister.

It is not clear if what Mizken has to wear during that memorable day. He has invited fashion designers. However, the guests are advised to wear all white and should wear black slippers or black sandals only. Wearing of gowns, Americana, leather shoes, high heels and rubber shoes are strictly prohibited.

friendship, trust and most importantly, love.

Gay marriage has become a hot-button issue in this country. In the US, the gay marriage ban was lifted and Ellen DeGeneres took the chance to marry actress Portia de Rossi. So is George Takei. And Rosie O'Donnell married Kelli Carpenter.

For the skeptics, gay marriages will not happen in Bohol but there are actually gay marriages held in Bohol— and are getting popular! In 2005, a gay marriage between two women was held in Panglao conducted by the Gahum Philippines, Inc. with the late founder Tonette Lopez). Another gay marriage between two men (a local beauty and an American) was held last year. A marriage between two women (who came from two prominent families) was cancelled two years ago—yet the couple lived happily together. Most of these gay marriages are done privately because they’re not given the chance to jump at the chance to walk down the aisle.

In the Philippines, gay marriage is illegal but if two people who make the pledge to love each other has a binding force and effect equal to that of a law.

That song, Through the Years (sung b y Kenny Rogers), we can easily belt out the entire song with all its stirring rhythm and harmony. This song will be forever famous for it is very touching, especially the line “Through the years

• First, this blind item: A young businessman (who likes to party) and his sexy girlfriend (who’s the apple of the eyes) whose sugary and sweetness has turned into bitterness couple of weeks ago. The unimpeachable Very Reliable Source (VRS) almost died laughing when he saw the two who met accidentally in a mobile business center to pay their bills. “It was an accident they met in an unexpected place in an unexpected time. They are into splitsville dear!” VRS said.

• Second splitsville item: Jane Censoria Cajes broke up with her politician boyfriend (a vice mayor in a province somewhere Luzon) for reasons never made clear. We saw the loveless Jane Tuesday who attended the regular session at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan a little bit “affected” or we say, “Heartbroken.” Asked if she can survive without a boyfriend (it’s Valentine’s Day next week! Ouch, ouch! ), she broke into a wan smile. “I have to concentrate in my studies and for the SK. My heart can wait for someone special,” she said.

• The storm is not yet over for the two brothers (they’re evangelists in a popular local church in Tagbilaran City) who have a “rift” on the stewardship (ownership?) of the church they’ve inherited. The “rift” started last year when a certain deacon (elder) asked some members to have their kids enrolled in a new school the deacon’s managing. The younger brother reacted (perhaps, he felt betrayed because he has a school) and some members made the situation “confusing” to the extent of establishing his own church. The younger brother had his petition — that he rightfully owns the church at the SEC—and only to be told to smoke pipe with his brother, well for reconciliation. The members are still “fighting” for their “rights”—but until when? In the first place, the younger brother and his members were not “forced” by the elder brother and members to leave the church. We hope the Lord God will enlighten them and the two brothers could iron things out so the members can sing Joyful, Joyful and have peace of mind while singing Sweet Hours of Prayers. The Lord has tested your faith and your doctrine.

• A very popular socialite and her equally very popular boyfriend dined in a resto. Everytime the lady went to the lavatory, she didn’t have any inkling that her boyfriend would get money from her bag. Oh well, with the huge amount of money she carries around, she could feel she is losing money!

• A former politician always has a “medical” alibi when she doesn’t want to see her supporters and bank personnel (they came to see her for solicitations and advices and to ask payments for the loan she made for the 2007 elections to the tune of P400,000 a month!). She would call in “sick” while enumerating the symptoms of an ailment from a medical book. When the bank personnel had talked with the helpers to check the politician’s health, the helpers told the personnel that their boss is well. Very original, very imaginative, very resourceful, isn’t she?
(Enough, let us attend the church service, folks!)

It was a running joke in Capitol that startled some employees to reality. It’s about their, well, getting heavier and heavier you know. For a while, they shrugged off co-employees picking on them being a fatso because making fun of each other has become part and parcel of everyday’s life. But the mirror doesn’t tell a lie. Looking at themselves, many (and more!) are ballooned to more than 210 pounds!

Last year, there was a request (appeal?) from the employees, staff and casuals to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan to allocate an area, room or place within the Capitol Building as a fitness center. But it didn’t happen. The request says, “where equipments such as but not limited to treadmills, barbells, dumbbells, stools, benches, bars and free weights could be placed for the use of all employees and workers within the Sanggunian or for those who work within the capitol compound if so desired.”

A minimal fee could be charged for the upkeep and maintenance of the equipments.

What prompt them to value wellness (knowing that they can’t resist fiestas and birthdays)? Here are their reasons:

• A sedentary lifestyle such as a desk bound job leads to increased weight, which in turn gives way to hypertension, circulatory and cholesterol problems, diabetics, arthritis, rheumatism and a host of other illnesses not usually found in a lean and fit individual.

• Studies have shown that the production of “serotonin,” a brain chemical that induces good mood and productivity is stimulated by regular exercise.

• The availability of exercise equipment may encourage personnel to adopt an exercise routine and to come early for their daily exercises.

• The availability and proximity of exercise equipment may allow employees to exercise during lunch breaks and after office hours.

• A lean and fit workplace would mean better productivity which in turn would rebound to better service to the populace and progress to the province of Bohol.
Can we guarantee the employees to serve the public effectively and efficiently if ever, that is a big if, the SP will allocate a room for the gym? We don’t want to sickly employees and we just hope that this will benefit everyone and not just for some.

I just watched The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (and other movies like Bedtime Stories and Slumdog Millionaire). I don’t want to preempt the film (the movie is still to be shown at Bohol’s modern cinema, the Island City Mall on Jan. 21, be there to experience the Pitt mania to boil! ) but everyone is talking about it since last year. It's a visually well constructed film that is constantly entertaining.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a 2008 American film, very loosely based on the 1921 short story of the same name written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The film was directed by David Fincher, written by Eric Roth, and stars Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. The film was released on December 25, 2008.

Brad Pitt’s performance is so gracefully convincing, that you can’t help but be
wowed over and over again.

The film allows us to take two journeys simultaneously -- one physical, and the other psychological. At its core, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is an inventive and involving mortality fantasy that isn't as much about the eponymous protagonist as it is about the people he meets along the way in life, and the profound effect they can have on his existence and world view -- even if their names tend to escape him from time to time. Benjamin Button came into this world with the body of an old man, but the spirit of a newborn child.

The story begins with the birth of the protagonist, Benjamin in 1860. Benjamin is born with the physical appearance of a seventy-year-old man, and when his father first visits him mere hours after his birth he is already able to speak. To avoid embarrassment, Benjamin's father forces him to shave his beard and dye his hair in order to look younger. He also forces Benjamin to play with the other neighborhood boys, and buys him toys and orders him throughout the day to play with them.

Benjamin obediently plays with them, but only to please his father as Benjamin has more joy in smoking his father's cigars, reading encyclopedias, and talking to his grandfather. He is even sent to kindergarten at the age of five, but is quickly withdrawn from the class after repeated instances of falling asleep during kid-oriented activities.

As the story progresses it soon becomes apparent to the Button family that Benjamin is aging backwards which astounds them beyond belief. At the age of eighteen he enrolls in Yale University. However, having run out of hair-dye on the day that he is supposed to register for classes, the officials at Yale send him away believing that he is a fifty-year-old lunatic.

Several years later, while attending a party with his father (who now looks to be the same age as Benjamin), Benjamin meets the young Hildegarde Moncrief, the daughter of a respected Civil War general. Hildegarde tells Benjamin that she would rather be with an older man because they treat women better. He dances with her, and they quickly fall in love and marry. Benjamin soon takes over his father's hardware business, and he proves to be highly adept at the job, while growing fabulously rich.

As Benjamin "grows younger," he begins to feel healthier and happier, as Fitzgerald says, "the blood flowed with new vigour through his veins." However, his wife ceases to attract him as she ages, and he soon decides to fight in the Spanish-American War. He serves with great distinction and receives a medal for a wound he received at the Battle of San Juan Hill. When he returns home his relationship with his wife deteriorates further, and he becomes more detached from her. He often leaves the house and goes to lavish parties and dances, while his wife is more settled in her ways.

In 1910 Benjamin turns over control of his company to his son, Roscoe, and enrolls at Harvard, with the appearance of a 20-year-old. His first year at Harvard is a great success, and he dominates on the football field. However, by the time Benjamin reaches his senior year he is a frail sixteen-year-old too weak to play football and barely able to cope with the academic load.

Benjamin returns home, and as the years progress he goes from being a moody teenager to being a young boy and is reluctantly cared for by his son. Eventually, he looks to be the same age as his own grandson, and even attends kindergarten with him. As his body grows younger, Button slowly begins to lose his memory of his earlier life.

The toys and games that he spurned as a newborn begin to interest him. As he reaches the end of his life he becomes a baby, and his nurse Nana takes him for walks and teaches him to say words. His memory deteriorates to the point where he can't remember anything except the immediate present, and eventually, all goes dark.

Homereach scholars

I’m very sure you’re familiar with Balik Medical Mission. It is one of the many projects initiated by the HomeReach Foundation to provide healthcare and surgical services, medications, surgical supplies and equipment for use at local hospitals.

HomeReach is composed of group of volunteers who often come together some evenings after work, even weekends into nights, sorting-and-packing materials for distribution to healthcare, education, livelihood and patrimony (Help) sites, or sharing ideas and experiences.
Another noble project of HomeReach is the Foster Parents Scholarship Program (FPSP). The FPSP was first organized, developed and created with love and prayer of the Bohol Circle of Eastern USA to provide high school and college scholarships and mentoring to low-income, high-potential students. HomeReach was among the staunch supporter of the scholarship program to build and sustain public understanding of the need for higher levels of educational attainment and lifelong learning.

The scholarship program is headed by Dr. Pepe Recitas and chaired by US- based computer analyst Manny Cempron. Roy Mondragon is the local coordinator and the “father” to the growing scholars.

The scholars who came from different towns of Bohol and other provinces have endless potentials. Last Christmas, one notable deed they had was spending time and giving joy to kids with disabilities at the Breaking Barriers for Children and Youth at K of C, this city.

Tagna-Tagna 2009

I greet our readers, tigmo- tigmo agukoy aron kita mag-asoy! Or I say, tagna-tagna agukoy aron kita mag-enjoy!

A lot of readers (who are diehard believers in the horoscope no doubt) have been asking what’s in store for them in the Year of the Earth Ox (actually the Chinese will celebrate it on January 26, 2009, or the year 4707 in the Chinese calendar).

Is the year 2009, the year of the Ox, oks na oks for all?

The Ox symbolizes diligence, reliability, sincerity, strength and sound judgment. But, don't expect these lumbering souls to have a sparkling sense of humor or be style conscious...it's not part of their precious package!

Astrologers say, on the whole, this will be a happier year than most: free from explosive events and wars and with far less catastrophes than, say, the years of the Tiger or the Dragon. Nonetheless, it will be spicy. It promises a lot of bickering, bargaining and petty arguments that will do little harm. A congenial time that will find most of us socializing and enjoying ourselves.

Oxens are also known in North America as water buffalos. They are the “cousin” animal of the carabao and cow. In Bohol, we love to eat carabeef during fiestas (in the town of Loboc, oh my God, I love kabaw chicaron and dinuguan, and, in Ubujan, Tagbilaran City and Sikatuna, they offer kabaw soup which is good for the stomach!). In Catigbian town, they have carabao for fashion and beauty pageant in the celebration of the Katigbawan festival.

My annual tagna-tagna, as usual and as expected, 90 percent of them came true. And to think that I don’t need Madam Auring or Sylvia Browne (there’s James Randi) to read the future for Bohol’s who’s who and newsmakers! Thanks to the power of radio, newspaper and the never-ending chika from the circle of friends.

• SK National President Jane Censorias Cajes and her politician boyfriend will bare headed for splitsville because of a pretty third party. She has lots of projects (and another international conference to attend to)!
• Titon Torralba (popularly known as Inday Rufing) will become an even bigger (more shows) “star” but his (?) love life will remain, sigh, zero.
• The “war” between Mayor Dan Neri Lim and others will get worse, and, before it gets worse some of the mayor’s friends will “abandon” him as the election is almost nearer!
• DyRD will axe programs (one of them topbilled by a popular commentator) and a station will be “discipline” by an organization. The popularity of radio programs will continue; paid programs will wane and will have less and less followers because they have nothing new to offer. However, Inyong Alagad will become remain popular.
• Ms Tagbilaran 2002 Twinkle Besas and Carl Ryan Du Lim (the apo of the Dui Ek Sam empire) will tie the knot anytime this year.
• Sorry, but no wedding bells for: Rey Boom Boom Bautista and her new girlfriend (not Miss CVRAA Carolyn Ronillo)
• But Atty. Doi Magdoza and Dra. Aileen Tan are seriously planning to march down the aisle (with the “blessings” of their parents). Love will find a way!
• Despite rumors to the contrary, Teddy Ramasola and his girlfriend (the real love of his life since they were in high school) romance will even grow stronger (Oops! The crystal ball suddenly becomes blurred. Hehehe!). But, sorry na lang for Ron Tan, RG Ong, Mayors Tom Gonzaga, Jono Jumamoy, who will have no choice but to remain singles (lovelife remain barren)!
• Baba Yap will reveal the identity of his girlfriend (if he has any) to the public. He will (probably) not going to settle down this year, if, and that is a big if, as he wants to enjoy single blessedness. The apple of his eyes can’t wait no more!
• Eric Ngo and his beauty queen girlfriend (if he has any) won’t be tying the knot this year (there is a shocking revelation about him)... and neither will Toyee Ramos and Mayor Rey Niño Boniel who want to remain illusive bachelors!
• Former Panglao Mayor Doloreich Dumaluan will continue to be hounded by controversy from which he’ll emerge unscathed, his popularity intact (and will even increase). Oppss, the cards changed colors!
• Brownbuds will release their second album after the phenomenal success of their first album (containing the song Byaheng Bohol and Iro!). Suitcases101 will have a new member and more gigs somewhere in Luzon.
• KatKat Schoof will get married to her boyfriend anytime this year after she will relinquish her crown, if, his bf can wait.
• Malou Cempron will remain “loveless,” (come on, get me, get me!) and so will broadcaster Chito Visarra (but not for long) and Eden Descallar (baby, am yours!)
• Joy Maglajos will admit that she’s going steady with her boyfriend and has a plan to settle down after she will relinquish the crown.
• Glenn Mark Blasquez will finally — finally! — meet the “woman of his dreams” whom he won’t marry.
• TBTK will be livelier this year but too far for the people to say. Moreover, controversies will continue.

As 2008 comes to a close, it's time to recognize those "who's who" and the "newsmakers" in Bohol who had us talking all year long. It's good news for some (like those who finally got their heads on straight) and bad news for others (like those who just can't seem to learn their lessons). Take a trip through the last 12 months and join us as we honor the "who's who" and the "newsmakers" who thrived - and shaked our heads at those who took a nosedive.

2008 saw the high incidents of "suicides" in Bohol. Six incidents, by any mean violent, happened in Bohol in Nov. and claimed the lives of eight persons. Four of the eight fatalities died as suicides in as many cases and in as many places. The rest died - with two each, of drowning and gun shots.

By the way, we love "who's who" breakups! It's not that we always wish the worst for Bohol's who's who and newsmakers; it's just that we love good gossip. some breakups can be devastating, while others couldn't make us smile more. We don't like being sad, we know it'll be better for them in the long run!

Best Sportsman: Nonito Donaire, the "Filipino Flash". The 26 year-old Talibon born captured our hearts and fueled our spirit as he punched his way into the history books. On February 16, 2008, Donaire received the Philipines Sports Award for 2007 Athlete of the Year, alongside amateur swimmer Miguel Molina. Amongst the list of nominees were Manny Pacquiao, Ronnie Alcano, WEsley So, and Frankie Minoza. On November 2, 2008, he retained his International Boxing FEderation Flyweight world title via a 6th-round (1:31) technical knockout of Moruti Mithalane.

Loser of the Year: Rey " Boom Boom" Bautista. We expect much for him after touted as the next Pacman. Though Bautista defended and won on August 30, 2008, Bautista (26 wins, 1 loss with 18 KO's) annihilated Mexican Eden "Anestecista" Marquez vist technical knockout in the 1:08 mark of the 2nd round of 12-rouner "WBO Night of Champions" in Waterfront Cebu City Hotel to retain his WBO Intercontinental super bantam title, he lost on November 22, 2008, Bautista (2602, 19 KOs) was vanquished at the MGM Grand Las Vegas by Heriberto Ruiz ( 40-7-2, 23 KOs)in Round 3 with scored, 80-70, 78-72 and 77-73.

Best Ongoing Feud: Tagbilaran City mayor Dan Neri Lim vs Vice Mayor Toto Veloso, Djingo RAma, Batchoy Alba, Bohol Chronicle. Who could believe that best friends Mayor Dan Lim and BAtchoy Alba and Djingo RAma are worst enemies? The world is still in an uproar over this feud for years utilizing the media to express what they want. Lim retaliated by going on the record with his own program to say that he thought these people (Veloso, Batchoy, Rama and Chronicle) were extermely "uncool". something tells us this feud will continue next year.

Worst Blabbermouth: Benjie Oliva never seems to learn his lesson. He hogged the "limelight" of so many controversies as a Commissioner of the National Youth Commission (NYC), how he was "scolded" by Gov. Erico Aumentado when he asked for endorsement and how Rep. Roberto Cajes "reacted" over his "claimed" on youth projects. We're not saying we're not happy for him - we just don't want him about it anymore.

Best Gossip: City hall Cash Advances. We have to admit - we just didn't see it coming. Just when the world couldn't stop talking about the cash advances at the City Hall, and broadcasters dropped the bobmshell the unliquidated cash advances. Byt the time acting city accountant Kurt Bungabong could not reveal who're those having the accounts, we managed to catch our breath - but just barely.

2nd Runner Up: The accusation that the Bohol Standard has no Mayor's permit and is illegitimate to publish municipal ordinances. According to lawyer Aleckoy Lim, "it is grossly malicious as it is without basis."

Best Scandal: City Minority Kagawad Djingo Rama exploded a bombshell in the halls of SP on Nov. 7, 2008 utilizing the 2007 COA REport that calls into question City Mayor Dan Neri Lim and his adminsitration for the multi-million fund mess.

2nd runner up: Benjie Oliva's falsification of public documents. he could face criminal action for fabrication official public documents issuance of a bogus and falisified DILG memorandum circular numbered MC 2007-03 dated January 11,2008 and forgoing a signature of DILG SEcretary Ronaldo Puno. SK sought the non-renewal of Oliva's appointment into the Commission because of "incompetance, dishonesty and disloyalty".

3rd runner up: The blogspot against University of Bohol stirred everyon in late September. meetings were held and efforts were made to remove the hate blog focusing against the Pamarans.

4th runner up: The public clamors for the city accountant and city auditor to reveal the complete list of cash advances by city officials and employees amounting to P6.5 million that remain unliquidated as exposed in the 2007 Commission on Audit Report. This as city acocuntant Kurt Bungabong and city auditor Teresita Irig rejected the request of Tagbilaran City Vice Mayor Jose Antonio Veloso to release the details of the unliquidated cash advances.

5th runner up : The loos of cooperative funds amounting to more than P2 million. The coop mess also caught the attention of Board Members Josephine Socorro Jumamoy, chair of the committee on cooperatives of the Sangguiniang Panlalawigan. According to the BPRMO admin costs are not really illegal and what happened was merely a procedural flaw.

Slap of the Year : The Supremet Court has affirmed the disqualification of Alburquerque Mayor Jose Ugdoracion who was found holding a "green card" or a certificate indicating his being a permanent resident of the United States. Ugdoracion is ordered unseated from his post as mayor in Associate Justice Eduardo Nachura's 12-page decision.

1st runner up: Mayor Jimmy Torrefranca. He was barred from entering the LTO office due to a dress code that is enforced on all clients as the LTO is its quest for international standard.

Best Turnaround: Mary Lovely Lingones. What a turnaround Lovely Ligones has made: from a shy girl into a beauty queen and model. She won the Miss Tagbilaran 2006 crown but lost in the Miss Bohol Sandugo 2008 despite the rumor she would get the crown. This girl is able to prove and sundry that she can make it in a national limelight as she won the October monthly finals of Miss Fitrum on ABS-CBN's Wowowee.

Worst Issue: Drainage system. Tagbilaran City residents expressed alarm on the impending serious problem of the city's drainage system. Water discharged at the new drainage system includes wastes from the more than 30 establishments and homes which authorities failed to unplug while the project was still in progress. This is adding volume and pollutants to what was originally designed to accommodate rain water to the drainage system along CPG Avenue.

1st runner up: Agora Square: After 14 years of being an eyesore in the city's commercial district, the Agora Market is finally competed into a new City Square. The Agora contract "stinks corruption". Three lawyers pushed for the cancelation of the rehabilitation-operate and transfer (ROT) contract entered into by the consortium of develo9ment and for the city government as it appears disadvantageous to the city government.

2nd runner up: The Small Town Lottery (STL) pushed by 3rd district Rep. Adam Relson Jala. The Church through Bishop Leonardo Medroso is firm on its stand in disallowing the entry of STL in Bohol. Legalizing gambling does not take away its immoral nature and that even with its gallant intentions it still does not lower the fact that it would cause illnesses to these people who resort to gambling as they would only depend on winning their bets and take chances on mere luck.

3rd runner-up: Our cute brothers, the tarsiers become stressed (others are found to have an infection that led to the bleeding) and the P50 entrance fee collected by the LBU Loboc.

4th runner-up: Tagbilaran Cainget Beach coliform issue. Bathers need not to worry because the DOH just recently said that Cainget Beach is coliform-free.

Best Couple: Brigido and Rosemarie Imboy. Wemay not see a lot of photos of Brigido and Rosemarie schmoozing on parties or posing together for souvenir shoots - but maybe that's their secret. Rosemarie removed the "rights" that Brigido can own a cellphone, you know, not to establish to all the girls he loved before. The couple continued to keep their relationship out of the "limelight" as much as possible.

Worst Couple: Cortes Mayor Apolinaria "Jasmin" Balistoy hogged the "limelight" as she broke her silence as a battered wife in a true-to-life story involving domestic violence, verbal abuse and kidnapping. The ogject of Mayor Balistoy's complaint was her hsuband of 15 years. The marriage was blessed with four children. Citing as her last resort to escape from the violent tantrums of her husband Mayor Balistoy filed a case for violence against women in accordance iwth SEction 42 of Republic Act No. 4660 with a given address at Canmanico, Valencia town, the mayor's husband, Jose Balistoy, was supposed to be served a subpoena regarding the case.

Case of the Year: Dumaluan Rape Case. The DOJ dismissed with finality the charges of rape with homicide against former Panglao Mayor Doloreich Dumaluan, brother Teofredo and another accused of the rape and murder of Vivian Dumaluan sometime in May 2004.

Worst Tragedy: More than 59 Boholanos were reported missing after the sinking of the Princess of the Stars in September. The captain of the vessel was a Boholano, Florencio Marimon, Sr., who was also found dead.

Best Hit-Maker: Tubigon's Mary Grace Torreon belted REgine Velasquez' versin of "I Don't WAnna Miss A Thing" which won for her the SK Pop Idol award. On the other hand, Jesat Cathy duce, SK Pop Idol 2006 is still singing. Paloma captured foreigners and tourists with her dance and moves. She is the caretaker of Prony, the biggest python in captivity in Albur. Though she performs lip-synch, we love how she projects herself as a snake and her booty calls.

Oldest Miss Bohol Sandugo:Miss Catigbian Joy Marie Maglajos won the most-coveted Miss Bohol Sandugo 2008 crown, she was the oldest among the candidtates who is 23 years old.

Miracle of the Year: A Christ statue ( the Santo Entierro or HOly Internment ) in Panggangan, Calape was found bleeding in March. Some skeptics see the bleeding Christ a flying Science. In Baclayon Church, the image of Padre Pio, an Italian priest miraculously appeared in one of its walls sometime in September.

Splitsville! 2008 definitely takes the cake of many splitsville! A councilor and his wife (who works in the government), the photographer and HR wife shaking marriage, a government employee and a Capitol department head, a lawyer and a plain housewife ( who was blamed for the death of their son), a company owner who found a new love ( the split resulted into family trouble), a doctor and a sickly husband, etc. These once-happy couples called it quits in '08.

Newest Nuptials. We watched lovebirds tie the knot this year. Today is Vida May Tirol's wedding.

In Momoriam. We pay tribute to the who's who - like Mrs. Charing Dejaresco - who passed away this year. She;s the Bohol media matriarch. The Darunday matiriarch Abundia Darunday, former Panglao Mayor Araoarao and Amparo Uy also joined our Creator.

I don't usually make New Year's resolution though I see New Year as God's gift for me to start anew and become a better me. And for this New Year, here's my prayer: " Lord grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Oh, it's four days before Christmas. Let us spread warmth, love and peace anyway we can. Together, we can try to make our world a little less hostile, a little more caring, and, much, much happier. While celebrating the Holidays, here's a Christmas message from US Ambassador Kristie Kenney (who fell in love with Bohol the first time she visited our province): Season's greetings to all in Bohol! Christmas brings friends and families together making this a very special time of the year. It's a time to remember how blessed we are, the wonderful friendships Americans and Filipinos share, the family connections we have, and the great partnership our two countries enjoy.

That song, O Holy Night (written by Placide Cappeau de Roquemaure in 1847) is one of my favorite Christmas songs which never fails turn me misty-eyed! The song encapsulates the memories of so many Christmases and tells us God's love and Jesus, the only begotten Son.

Christmas time definitely is a time for making wishes and having happy thoughts and then when it gets to January we all get the January blues and forget about all the nice hopes and dreams and happiness we had on that magical day! Sound like a child but Christmas really is magical and hopefully Santa is reading my special wishes for myself, others and for the world I would like this Christmas!!

I've lots of wishes this Christmas. For material things: Asus laptop with an Illustrazio laptop bag, more pair of Havaianas, a Jansport backpack for traveling, gym registration (Hahaha!! I badly need this!!) and a shopping spree!!! This list is not complete and I thank you to those who are already packing their gifts for me.

The tallest and biggest Santa Claus in Bohol (also in the whole country) is in Poblacion, Sierra Bullones. It measures 30 feet (or more) and is located in front of the newly constructed municipal hall.

Host: What are the thoughts you can share for this coming Christmas?
Guest: We must do even more to love God, forgive the sinners and do god to other and we have to avoid grevious sin! (Grevious sin?)

Could it be a blue Christmas for a photographer and a HR head? It pains me to learn that the sugary sweetness between a photographer and his beautiful HR wife is, alas, turning sour. When last heard from, the wife "scolded" the photographer and "accused" him of playing "fire" with the secretary. The HR wife asked her hubby-photographer to choose "to fire the secretary or leave." Since the hubby photographer could not fire the secretary this Holidays, when he went home, all his things are already packed outside the house! It seems that they are helplessly headed for splitsville! We hope they can iron things out, patching whatever loopholes here and there. How sad!

Okay, all together now, let’s sing the hit song Forevermore as we anticipate the arrival of its singer, Side A, which is having a concert on Friday, Dec. 19 at the Dagohoy Ballroom Sandugo of the Bohol Tropics (after MYMP and Kim Chiu performed on July 19 and other big performers).

“Side A will do what they do best — endear themselves to the Boholano audience by singing the soundtrack of our lives. It is a once-in-a-lifetime treat for musical lovers out there,” says Donald Fuertes, the event manager/sales and marketing of the Lazer Party Club. By the way, Donald is also the talent handler of the Models Unlimited.

Considered the country’s top-selling artists, Side A band boasts of a wide selection of hits—from new wave, love ballads, retroes, to originals.

Side A is one of the most popular bands in the country. They were considered equivalent to Toto as The Eraserheads to The Beatles. They were accepted by the mainstream proven by their hit records, sold-out concerts and recognitions they have received. Being true to themselves, their music and their fans was the secret of the band’s success.

The band was formed on 1985 in Manila, Philippines by Naldy Gonzales and a former member. They performed in several gigs in hotel lounges with their innocuous, easy listening style that reflected the tastes of the masses though the city were developing a new wave/punk scene.

Side A is composed of Joey Generoso (lead vocals and acoustic guitars), Joey Benin (bass guitar and vocals), Naldy Gonzales (keyboards and vocals), Ernie Severino (drums and vocals) and LeeVon Cailao (lead guitar and vocals). They popularized the songs Hold On, Tuloy Pa Rin Ako, Eva Marie, Forevermore, I Believe in Dreams, Let The Pain Remain and Set You Free.

This is perhaps the last concert of Joey Benin or Joey B. for short, the youngest of the band. According to a showbiz insider, he is retiring to settle here in Bohol to concentrate in a farm business. Joey B. joined the band on 1986 and played the bass ever since. His looks and voice melted the hearts of the females and was responsible of the bands stardom with his single “Eva Marie.”

Listeners were “terrified” how she butts-in a controversial discussion (by two veteran anchormen) showing her “ignorance” and “lack of knowledge.” She even commented when she read text messages. When the news director called her attention to find out what’s her business, it was learned that an anchorman told her to “guess” in the radio program.

The other gatecrasher (who’s new in a station after transferring from her mother station) is a male “junior reporter” who allegedly anchored a paid radio program without being asked to do so. While he was talking, the original anchor arrived and he went out without saying a word to the listeners he’s leaving.

We like the way how our Boholano sexy vixens projected on TV (having luscious bodies to die for) in the search for the Miss Fitrum 2008 in the toprating noontime show Wowowee hosted by Willie Revillame.

Miss Tagbilaran 2007 Mary Lovely Ligones of Barangay Bool (and Miss Photogenic in Miss Bohol Sandugo 2008) is now the nation’s fantasy as she became the October monthly finalist in the said search.

She studied at Bohol National High School, Sacred Heart College- Tacloban and moved to Holy Name University.

“She is very confident now!” exclaimed the fans who saw her on TV. She looks fabulous than those the ASF Dancers (ASF stands for the initials of their manager, Anna S. Feliciano. They are also known as the Wowowee Girls and are most active on the show’s Pera o Bayong portion).

A Libra, her hobbies and interests are watching TV, reading books and magazines and joining beauty pageants. She likes the movies I am a Legend, I Know Who Killed Me and the Golden Compass. She is into love songs, acoustic and RnB.

On the other hand, Mary Ley Ann Lugod (popularly known as Mayumi) is last week’s weekly finalist last Dec. 3. Mayumi was asked to join the search in February but she turned down the offer because she was undecided at that time. Her fans are hoping she can make it to the monthly finals, if, that is a big if, she can be the monthly finalist (with your prayers!), the search will have two equally beautiful Boholanas who will display their beauty, grace and sophistication.

I knew Mayumi and I saw her when was a beautiful kid at the Victoriano D. Tirol Advanced Learning Center. She finished her high school at Holy Name University. At present, she’s a Masscom student at the Perpetual Help College in Manila.

A part-time model, she was crowned Miss Makati Tourism 2007. She was ICM’s Circle of Ten Teen Quest Grand Questor '05, a member of the Lupon ng mga Batang Aktor, UNTV37 model, Generation East 2007 finalist, member of the Perpetualite Editorial Staff and Perpetual Help College Choir.

I still love Caingget Beach

No matter what they say, my love for Caingget Beach (a popular destination in Tagbilaran City) will never change.

The coliform issue (for the second time) could not make the place dead. Coliform bacteria are the commonly-used bacterial indicator of sanitary quality of foods and water. They are defined as rod-shaped Gram-negative non-spore forming organisms that ferment lactose with the production of acid and gas when incubated at 35-37°C.

Coliforms are abundant in the feces of warm-blooded animals, but can also be found in the aquatic environment, in soil and on vegetation. In most instances, coliforms themselves are not the cause of sickness, but they are easy to culture and their presence is used to indicate that other pathogenic organisms of fecal origin may be present.

When you say Caingget Beach, Boholanos (especially the Tagbilaranons) have a story to tell. People in walks of life, including you and I, go there for swimming and food. We can choose gastronomic foods like sinugbang sunghan, squid, isda sa bato and koja, a local delicacy which can be found abundantly in Caingget sea.

Koja, a coral clam is from the Pectinide family with scientific name pedum spondyloidum (thanks to Mr. Loloy Milana, BFAR aquaculturist) can be found anywhere but it is only at Caingget Beach that nature constantly blesses the place. For decades, the sea is producing koja and other seafoods as evidenced by the numerous shells found in beach drift. Empty seashells are often picked up by beachcombers, and collecting these shells is a harmless hobby or study.

The koja divers go to the sea early morning to get our favorite koja, five to seven feet deep! This livelihood enables the koja divers to feed the family and send their kids to school.

At first glance, koja looks like a stone. The koja divers use an improvised hammer to pound the hard, protective outer layer of the koja. They use a knife to get the soft part of the shell.

Why people love to eat koja? “It’s delicious and nutritious,” says Dr. Perlita Palen, city agriculturist, who is also from barangay Booy.

You can eat koja with your bare hands; dip it in vinegar with pepper with puso, camote or saging (and bahalina, of course for digestion and to quench the thirst!).

And there’s a secret of koja: it is an aphrodisiac! Those who are lousy in bed, koja can help you become “hot” and “wild.” Sometime in 2006, I did a story about koja and the people of Caingget for Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho on GMA 7. There are many countless stories how koja “helped” them in producing babies. For men, koja will make you virile and your ding-a-ling is always ready for a fight! For women, koja can help for fertility and ovulation. Although there are no formal studies conducted about koja and its effect, however, the testimonies from the people defy skepticism.

Our sea is probably not feeling well or sick. Remember the principles of nature?

Nature has a way of changing things. There may be a message to all of us of what is happening now in our environment. We need to listen with all our hearts then we will understand.

According to a Very Reliable Source (VRS), the young lawyer linked to the businesswoman already frequents the businesswoman’s unit just three days after she bought the place. This does not help continuous denials from both the businesswoman and the young lawyer that they are not an item!

Got an email from Peru: President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo unveiled on Nov. 23 the bust of Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal at the newly named Rizal Park in Lima, Peru.

The unveiling rites were held on the last day of her visit to Peru to attend the two-day 16th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders' meeting at the Ministry of Defense Convention Center in Lima.

The bust of Rizal was designed by Czech sculptor Libor Piszlac of Litomerice, Czech Republic, the place where Rizal's friend, Ferdinand Blumentritt, once lived.
The bust is mounted atop a quadrilateral pedestal where four inaugural plaque markers are mounted on each side.

Inscribed in one marker are the words: "Dr. Jose P. Rizal, Heroe Nacional de Filipinas, Nacionalista, Reformador Political, Escritor, Linguistica y Poeta, 1861-1896."

Inscribed in another marker are the details of the formal inaugural rites led by Mrs. Arroyo and witnessed by Prada.

The bust of Rizal was donated by Hans Gunter Schoof - a German married to a Filipina from Baclayon, Bohol - who is a passionate admirer of Rizal, especially the national hero's exploits in Germany.

Schoof now owns a plush resort in Bohol which boasts of a fine collection of Rizal memorabilia.

The establishment of the Rizal Park in Lima was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Philippine Honorary Consulate in Peru and the municipality of La Molina.

While Peruvians salute Rizal’s heroism, the Schoof couple are here in Bohol with their daughter, Katrina, who turned a another fab year on Nov. 24 (we missed to greet her on her special day, mea culpa!) and her birthday celebration scheduled on Nov. 29 (a party was held on Nov. 29, the first time she celebrated her birthday on Bohol and at the same time the opening of The Peacock Garden Luxury Resort and Spa’s wine cellar) was attended by tons of her pals, from business and Cosmo Manila’s, Cebu’s and Tagbilaran’s social set.

Kat is likable to Disney’s enchanted princess tales—Jasmine, Snow White, Cinderella, Ariel, Belle, Aurora and Mulan (although they were figment they are teaching us to follow our dreams) because she lives life like a princess. Name it and she has it all, princes!

Kat is also a globe trotter. Her last vacations in Palau and Macau were filled with happy memories including her closest pal and cousin Glenn Mark Blasquez who joined her recent trips.

“My lovely cousin is one of a kind! She is like a sister to me. I have good memories with her and I don’t even remember we fight,” shares Glenn.

They like buko juice, swake (sea urchin), kinilaw and tilapia (that’s why they have a small fishpond for tilapia). Kat, who lives like a princess is not “maarte” unlike other rich socialites. “But she is a very humble and kind person.”

She’s definitely a gadget explorer. “Because I observe she has the latest cellphone, laptop, and camera and other girl things, you name it, she has it!” reveals Glenn.

And when you check her closet, it’s neat and all arrange from dress to shoes. She’s smart and adventurous too just like her mom and dad.

Bohol has seen the family’s generosity. “I saw their family generosity by helping other relatives and other people and not letting them down,” Glenn adds.

Kat celebrated her debut years ago and it was one of her most memorable events in life. True to Han’s words that “she’s now a fine lady,” Glenn is looking forward to her wedding day. “Good luck for your future wedding,” says Glenn.

By the way, Kat is already engaged to her man and love of her life. Where and when they met? Well, that is another book to be read, says Glenn. Interesting, interesting!

Brownbuds to release new album

If there’s a band that is more driven these days, it is Brownbuds (Mendel’s Legacy).
Despite their popularity and status, the group is determined and as hardworking as before especially with their second album “Getting Tough.”

The album has the hit lead single “Grind,” which promises to be a big song with its contagiously easy-sing-along chorus that plays up the line “Grind baby, grind baby, come on and shake your booty, grind baby, grind baby, come over, let’s get busy.” The song embodies the ingredients enough to provide listeners with something to enjoy with, whatever your gender or gender preference is. There is something to look forward to again as Brownbuds releases the second single of the album entitled “Kumusta Ka Na.”

Amiel Jim Penecios is the group’s lead vocalist, who has been attracting live audiences with his distinctive voice, dreadlocks hair and innate talent, El Cid Tirol (lead guitarist), Richard Lagroma (rhythm guitarist), Milo Miranda (bass), Arlon Seno (drums), and Jason Piodos (keyboards).

Brownbuds released its self-titled CD back in 2007, from where they released singles (Byaheng Bohol, Iro, Wake Up, Olah ) earned good radio and music channel plays. (Grab a copy of the album at Q Music Video, BQ Mall for only PhP200.) Byaheng Bohol became Bohol’s unofficial theme song for tourism.

Trisha Chatto: Sweet 16

Having seen her as a tot in the loving arms of her mom, Dame Maria Pureza Chatto (wife of public servant 1st district Rep. Edgar Chatto), I have to rub my eyes twice to make sure that the flawless-complexioned, dainty young lady (who turned 16 yesterday, Nov. 22, this tradition is a welcoming of a girl to womanhood just like a debut which has the same essence as the Sweet 16 and Quinceañera) before me is, indeed, Trisha Chatto (Esther Patrisha Veloso Chatto in real life).

How she has grown! It seems only yesterday my friend that her mom was seen bringing along in her meetings and social events.

“Once in a lifetime does a girl turn sixteen, never again will this age be seen. I am now Sixteen!” says Trisha.

Trisha’s birthday reminds me of Sound of Music’s Sixteen Going On Seventeen-- “ I am sixteen going on seventeen, I know that I'm naïve, fellows I meet may tell me I'm sweet, And willingly I believe…I am sixteen going on seventeen, innocent as a rose, bachelor dandies, drinkers of brandies, what do I know of those..”

Being the only daughter of a well-to-do family, she may have grown with a silver spoon in her mouth, but she remains simple and unaffected.

Trisha’s cause for the underprivileged goes back when she was in elementary at the Bohol Wisdom School. She could help in raising funds for the Girl Scouts of the Philippines, United Nations Youth Association of the Philippines, Pink Panthers and other charitable institutions. On her birthday, she asked her friends “to omit gifts” and those who wished to donate cash or in kind can help the Life Philippine Foundation for her feeding program for indigent children.

Since then, she has been actively involved in various community works and has been exposed to the community. It wasn’t long when she joined the Samahang Kabataan Volunteers Club (SKVC), an extended arm of the Sangguniang Kabataan Bohol Federation office.

As to why she is drawn to doing community work, she relates “I’ve already been blessed with everything I could possibly ask for. I want to be able to help those who are not as fortunate as I am. I also believe that it’s my duty as an individual and as a Filipino to help my fellowmen. It’s also a way for me to improve myself through the different experiences I get by being involved in various activities and a way to make new friends.”

She may have all the material comforts a girl her age wants, but her desire goes beyond the material. She must have be lucky to have a supportive family and friends who are more than willing to support her simple mission.

What’s up?

• Sam Penaso, a visual and performance artist from Bohol, will present his recent abstract paintings in his 10th solo exhibition opens on November 21 (6pm) to December 4 at the Galerie Astra, 2nd level, LRI Design Plaza, Nicanor Garcia St. (Reposo) Bel Air ll, Makati City, Tel. 8903988.

Penaso recently has been invited to do his Performance Art at “Asia Performance Art Festival” in Seoul and Gwangju Biennale, Korea and also a Group exhibition at Gallery Nuri, Korea Foundation Cultural Center.

His exhibition entitled “Keombae” is taken from the Korean term for “cheers” inspired by his short trip around Seoul and Gwangju Biennale.

A Bachelor of Fine Arts graduate from the Technological University of the Philippines, Penaso also took units in sculpture at Philippine Women’s University Institute of Fine Arts, He is one of the core members of the Tupada Action and Media Art (Tama) group of Performance Artist.

Our dog will be a friend for life... always there with a wagging tail, a smiling face and a wet nose to welcome you home or just to say "hello.” Chubby celebrated “her” birthday with the kids (thanks to Jane Censoria Cajes of SK for the cake, Dennis Du of Dunkins for the munchkins). The no-nonsense journalist takes his job seriously, that’s clear. It’s no joke being in charge of five programs on dyRD (Inyong Alagad (Monday to Thursday), 7:30 a.m.- 9:00 a.m.; Ok Ba Doc? (Monday to Friday), 2:30 p.m- 3:00 p.m.; dyRD Action Line (every Wednesday), 3:15 p.m.- 4:15 a.m.; Radyo Merkado (every Saturday), 7:00 a.m.- 10:00 a.m.; Takna sa Bohol Light and Bohol Water (weekdays), 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.) handling them with sobriety and equilibrium and touting him the busiest radio personality in Bohol!

“And there’s one more program hopefully,” he gasps. He will handle a new program about the controversial reproductive health.

The opportunity to anchor the programs couldn’t have come at a better time for Chito who, until a few years ago, had felt his career had reached a plateau.

He admits that, as an anchor, he tends to be too hands-on, “researching and anchoring.”

More important, despite the crushing deadlines and hectic schedule of journalism, his surrogate daughter never missed his presence.

Chito never ceases to remind the up-and-coming wards to hold on the integrity and credibility. “We can discuss current issues practically under the sun... it’s my responsibility to inform them,” he says.

He came from a clan of politician (remember Congressman Genaro Visarra?) and, as early as now, there’re people who are pushing him to run for councilor in 2010. The dyRD people only had one concern; they asked Chito straight, “Are you going to run for public office?” They don’t want it used for political motives.” To which he earnestly answered, “No!”

“I never entertained running for public office. You can serve the people according to what God has given to you,” he quips.

And how about his lovelife? Chito is an eligible bachelor, think of it girls.

Not one to turn down a request for help if he can help it, Chito also agreed to a short ten-minute interview ---while he’s rushing for his next assignment.

How much time do you have for yourself? Not much. More time with my nephews & nieces, friends and my surrogate family.

What do you do to unwind? Read, music and nature. I hate Tagbilaran because I love small towns and barangays away from the madding crowd.

What advice would you want to give young broadcast students who want to reach your level of success? You're giving me more than I deserve. I've just been in this for three years. My advice “it’s the content that matters not your voice. So do your homework.”

Suitcase101 launches debut album

I can't even count how many times I've told myself never to interview another band. Friends have started telling me I'm biased when I praise bands. Ooh, I'm so sorry, you said you wanted Rivermaya?Suitcase101, a local band from Bohol is no fledging band with big dreams. It is composed of young, idealistic musicians.

Last week, I saw them performed (singing the SK theme song) during the SK National Congress held at the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug Cebu City with Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as guest of honor (who said "Maganda!" referring to the band's performance) and more than 2,000 SK leaders from all over the country headed by SK national president Jane Censoria Cajes.

Their story goes back three years ago when they decided to start a band. The name Suitcase101 was derived from the band Matchbox20, whom at that time the band started was quite popular. Formed in the mid-2005, Suitcase101 started as an acoustic band in a local resto bar in Bohol (we watched them performed at the then Martin's Bar with friends John Torralba, de Ers, Engr. Aprilmel Lupot, Julan Cordova, UBSSG etc for a drinking spree)with the band original members Alexis Balista, Rissa Cabalit and Sam Varquez who left the band for some reasons. Vocalist Adrian Bayron was in the band then.

Its metamorphosis was closely watched by fans from being an acoustic band to alternative rock band. Suitcase101 continued performing and composing songs the new members decided to take the "band thing" seriously. With Adrian on vocals, Alva Duaban on guitars, Arvin Avergonzado on drums and Venjo Busalla on bass. Slowly gaining popularity with their first original composition "Kalahati" as their regular audience would bring over a friend the next time they come. There was even a time that the song was played twice on the same night as late comers would insist on requesting for the song even though it was already played earlier.

They recorded the song "Kalahati" and two other original tracks namely "Never Need Someone" and "Three Years Since" in Backyard Project Studios in Cebu City last March 2007. They burst into Bohol's music scene as they released "Kalahati" and "Never Need Some" on local radio stations 911 FM and 102.3 Kiss FM, winning 6 Battle of the Bands, and opened for Manila-based artists such as Bamboo, Imago, Moonstar88, Hale and Urbandub to name a few.

Suitcase101 created a wave when the band the national search of the GlobeKantabataan 2007. It seems that there was no depth on the band's name, but during the course of the Globe Kantabataan competition, the band was frequently traveling back and forth Manila and Bohol. They discovered that traveling together with the band makes their bond a lot stronger and they just love traveling together. Hence, the name Suitcase101 just fit quite right for the band.

Slowly gaining recognition in the Visayas area as their songs "Kalahati" and Globe Kantabataan winning entry "Posible ang Lahat" are enjoying regular airplay in Cebu's radio stations 91.5 Hot FM and 93.1 Smash FM. The recent Battle of the Band that they won was Sandugo Battle of the Bands '07 where Adrian won the Best Vocalist, Alva as the Best Guitarist, and Arvin won as the Best Drummer for the third time. But the most prestigious competition they have won is the Globe Kantabataan '07. Besting over hundreds of hopefuls and making them 7-time Battle of the Bands Champions.

Following the success of Globe Kantabataan, Alva decided to leave the band to pursue his nursing degree, a move that every parent should be proud of. Getting another guitarist was not a problem as Felix Bacareza was ready to fill the void that Alva left. Felix is not a stranger to the band as he had already played with the band as a session guitarist.

The closeness of the members and support from their families and girlfriends-they gave the band the rush of energy-the energy they need to go to the studio, practice, produce an album and perform more gigs. The band thrives on playing live. Be it a small gathering or a big arena, they will sweat the same. Fueled by diverse influence on each of the members, their music combines an aggressive melodic vibe with honest to goodness lyrics, raw emotion and unrestrained passion.

After three years, Suitcase101 has a self-titled debut album. They don't have regrets releasing a "late" album as the cliché goes, there's time for everything.

The album has 11 songs--- Riddle, Three Years Since, Kalahati, Never Need Someone (they hate girls!), 163, Starlight, Foreman, Handuraw, Boholano, Live Loud Kicking Out and Lakas ng Himig, the official theme song of the Sangguniang Kabataan--- with two bonus tracks, Kalahati acoustic version and Posible Ang Lahat. Listening to the songs, Suitcase101 is creating a sound different from the rest, it's a Suitcase brand of music toning down the sound of maturity and turning up the volume of youthfulness. The songs in the album are edgies, funckier and really speak about their age and the fans.

Blessed Assurance

It’s the time of the year when mortals feel intimations of mortality, the temporariness of life, and the permanence of everlasting life.

Each year, on Nov. 1, All Saints Day, and Nov. 2, All Souls Day, we troop to the cemetery to visit our dead ones. It is one way of assuring ourselves that our departed ones are truly gone temporarily separated from us --- that one day we should be together again in Heaven with our Maker and Infinite Intelligence. As we all remember our dear departed, I want to share with you stories of hymnists who in one or another always reminding us that we are mortals and we are dust in the wind.

We sing gospel songs because, well, we just like to - they are the musical equivalent of comfort food. But more importantly, we sing them because they connect many times with great All Souls Day and Lenten themes of sin, redemption, the cross, the resurrection and heaven or hell.

The next time you sing an old, familiar hymn, look at the small print at the bottom or top of the page and you probably will read the name of Fanny Crosby.

For the past days, I’m busy youtubing Fanny Crosby’s hymns. Frances Jane Crosby (March 24, 1820 – February 12, 1915, popularly known as Fanny Crosby, the Queen of Gospel Songs) was an American poetess and lyricist best known for her Christian hymns. A lifelong Methodist, she was one of the most prolific hymnists in history, writing over 8,000 despite being blind from shortly after birth. Also known for her preaching and speaking, during her lifetime Fanny Crosby was one of the best known women in the United States . To this day, the vast majority of American hymnals contain her work. Some of her best known songs include "Blessed Assurance", "Jesus Is Tenderly Calling You Home," “I am Thine O Lord,” "Praise Him, Praise Him," and "To God Be the Glory." Every song is a testimony of her love for Jesus Christ.

Since some publishers were hesitant to have so many hymns by one person in their hymnals, Crosby used nearly 100 different pseudonyms during her career.

"Blessed Assurance" (one of the most beloved hymns of all time) is a well-known Christian hymn. Crosby was visiting her friend Phoebe Knapp as the Knapp home was having a large pipe organ installed. The organ was incomplete so, using the piano, Mrs. Knapp played a new melody she had just composed called "Assurance". "What do you think the tune says?" asked Knapp.

"Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine," answered Fanny Crosby.

She later remarked: It seemed intended by the blessed providence of God that I should be blind all my life, and I thank him for the dispensation. If perfect earthly sight were offered me tomorrow I would not accept it. I might not have sung hymns to the praise of God if I had been distracted by the beautiful and interesting things about me.

She also once said, "when I get to heaven, the first face that shall ever gladden my
sight will be that of my Savior!"

She composed her poems and hymns entirely in her mind and then dictated them to someone else. She was said to work mentally on as many as twelve hymns at once before dictating them all.

Fanny was very well known during her time and often met with presidents, generals and other dignitaries. She played the hymn "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" at President Grant's Funeral in 1885. In her later years, she also became a popular public speaker.

When she died, her tombstone carried the words, "Aunt Fanny" and "Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine. Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine."

Decades after Fanny…

In Bohol, there’s Onecimo Oclarit, popularly known as One who spends most of his
time as church musician (at the St. Joseph Cathedral).

Like Fanny, One is a blind composer and hymnist. He is an example of giving back his life and talent to the Lord through his hymns. Churchgoers are familiar of “Sulod Kamo Nga Malipayon,” “Ania Kita Nagsaulog,” “Dayegon Ta Ang Ginoo,” “Ania Kami Ginoo” and “Dawata O Ginoo,” these are One’s compositions to signal the start of the mass. Other One’s songs are “Ang Tawo Mamatay Gayud,” “Bisan Pa Man,” “Kanunay Buhi ang Kinabuhi,” “Pamatia O Ginoo” and “Tawo Ayaw Kalimot sa Abog ka Gikan” are sung during requiem mass. “These songs remind us that we are humans,” One said.

His composition Señor San Jose is sung anywhere in the world where there are Visayan devotees of St. Joseph .

“This is unto the Lord,” One said. Blind in 1957 from typhoid fever (his survival was considered by Manila doctors as “miracle” at that time) he had never questioned the will of God. He wished to become a lawyer.

“I had questions but I don’t blame God even if my world is in total darkness,” he continued. The Church helped him to regain his faith to the Lord and confidence of himself as he started serving the Lord when he was 12 years old as bell ringer for 14 years and official organist.

One, who is now 58 years old, won the 1994 Grand Original Composition for the song “Balik sa Bohol” which is popularized by local singers in Loboc in floating restos. He also won the 12th Cebu Pop Music in 1994 for the song “Kay Gihigugma Ko Ikaw.” He’s also the man behind the jingles of CBB and Ubi Festival.

“I don’t ask for wealth that can’t change my character. It’s enough that I can eat three time a day, in good health and with my family,” the contented One said. He is married to Trinidad with whom he has three children, Rosauro Mariano, Ma. Luisa and Ma. Alma . He has 10 grandchildren.

God has proven to me, that the blind can see, and He did that through Fanny Crosby and One Oclarit. We noticed that in God's sense of equality and magnanimity, He has gifted many blind people as well with the extra-ordinary talent in music. They were never bitter about their disability.

Fanny Crosby, One Oclarit (with other blind singers and composers like Stevie Wonder and George Matheson) and those who’re physically challenged could have made many excuses--- they are blind….but they served the Lord any way and look the Lord did through them. He can use you too.

We like to party. This statement came from Baba Yap (John Geesnell Yap II in real life) who turned a year "wiser" (age not revealed) on October 16. During his birthday, this party organizer and event specialist did "meditation" a peace of mind! And he received a very special gift from someone special, the "apple" of his eyes.

Baba is the big boss of Lazer Party Club. If people think that Tagbilaran City's nightlife is deadly boring and has no place to party, obviously they've never been to Lazer Party Club (located at the posh Bohol Tropics Resort).

Lazer Party Club is still the best party hang-out in the city with its resident disk jock DJ Macky Magic, Models Unlimited and the hottests bands, molecules (performing every Fridays and Saturdays), Muddcake (performing every Friday) and Centerstage (performing every Wednesday and Saturday).

Lazer introduces something new once in a while. This year, it has invited notable artists and performers like Kim Chiu and MYMP (Make Your Momma Proud), Kim Chiu publicly announced she has a crush on Baba (Kim Chiu has relatives in Cortes, Bohol and she visited Bohol more often when she was relatively "unknown" in showbiz). For the 10th edition of the Cinemanila International Film Festival, Amable "Tikoy" Aguiluz VI announced that they have chosen to confer this year's Lifetime Achievement Award to screenplay writeer Jose "Pete" Lacaba Jr. Lacaba is the son of Jose Monreal lacaba of Loon, Bohol and Fe Flores from Pateros, Rizal. his grandmother Agapita is the sister of Reigh Monreal's grandfather Guillermo Monreal. (Full name : Jose Maria Flores Lacaba Jr. Usual byline: Jose F. Lacaba. The late Jose Sr. was nicknamed Pepe, so Jr. was nicknamed Pepito, the little Pepe. In college Pepito's nickname got shortened to Pito, but the latest gave rise to jokes about armpits, so Pit was respelled Pete.)

"It's about time! Pete should be a National Artist for Cinema. Number one, lahat ng pelikula ni Lino Brocka na nag-compete sa Cannes, sino ang sumulat? Si Pete Lacaba," Says Tikoy Aguiluiz.

Last July, Mr. Lacaba received the Aruna Vasudev Lifetime Achievement Award at the 10th Osian's- Cinefan Festival of Arab and Asian Cinema in New Delhi, India. His screenplay credits include Jaguar, which competed at the Cannes International Film Festival in 1980, while Bayan Ko: Kapit sa Patalim competed in 1984. Orapronobis was screened out of competition in 1989. Ricky Lee co-wrote Jaguar with Mr. Lacaba.

Dr. Mutya Kismet Tirol-Macuno at 50 : 50 carats

Today, Oct. 5, Dr. Mutya Kismet Tirol-Macuno turns 50. She looks 50 carats but not 50-years old. The widely-smiling Mutya had just finished her cycling 'round Bohol (supposed not to be done by someone who now 50 but who cares?) on Sept. 25 (accompanied by her sister, Bohol's internet princess Leah Tirol-Magno, Bohol, Art Magno and son Miguel Carlos) for the kids who are dear to the heart of this golden girl.

It was not just an ordinary bike, it was a "bike for a cause" to help raise funds to buy portable x-ray machine (amounting to 1.2 million pesos) to the Gov. Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital (where Mutya is a medical specialist 2 and training officer department of pediatrics).

The following tête à tête revolves around Mutya's checkered career, every aspect of which the public already knows and her private life (a glimpse of it anyway), the peaks and valleys of a life-well lived.

God will grant her wish because she has a golden heart. Here's Dr. Mutya Kismet Tirol-Macuno straight from the heart:

Your motto is : There is always something better.

How were you brought up as a child, being the eldest in the brood? I was brought up to set as a good example to my siblings. in a God fearing and God centered way.

Weren't you spoiled with money? I'm not. We were never given any money as baon to school when we were small. We were only given food, as my mother says the money will teach us to spend instead.

Really? You're born with a proverbial spoon to say! Yes.. I can even recall that everytime we have school functions, and we have to have new shoes or new clothes, i would be last person to get a new one in our class, since my mother will not buy me anything new right away. i guess it made me strong that way.

You're parents are into politics (including her uncle former Tagbilaran City Mayor Jes B. Tirol and aunt former city vice mayor Nuevas Tirol-Montes) did your parents try to convince you to enter politics? At the moment, they are talking me into it.. but I'm praying for more guidance.

In your 24 years as a doctor, what do you consider your most memorable experience? That time when I was a first year pediatric resident, I was on duty, and I was called to help this small premature who had difficulty breathing.. my heart was wrenched with so much despair, because I knew I wanted to help her, but i could not do it, because nobody taught me how to do it since at that time, neonatology was still in its infancy and in the Philippines, it was not widely practiced yet. So, then and there, I knew that I wanted to learn more how to take care and help these small premature babies, learn as much as i can locally and abroad, and apply what I learn here in my people in Bohol.

Is it hard being a wife? No. its exciting!

Do you have regrets of not having a biological child? At one point in time. But now, I understand its God's will that all my children are the ones I'm taking care of, because I suppose if I had a lot of biological kids, (She wanted to have 5!-LPU) it would have been difficult for me to focus on being a neonatologist as it is.. so, I guess afterall, I was just fitting into God's mold for my life.

At 50, what is the most important lesson that life has taught you? That it is more important to share, to extend yourself to others no matter what, and that it is more important to focus on what you can do, rather than on what cannot be done, and to continue to live in full faith and trust in the Lord and to serve Him fully.

Do you believe in that? Yes!

Why touring around Bohol , you know, in bike? Because first and foremost, i am a true and native Boholana and proud to be one, and i wanted to experience and see my province close at hand, and it was more meaningful for me to tour bike around Bohol for this project since the people I want to serve are the Boholanos.

If you could have changed anything in your life what would it be? My height (laughs) aside from that, I praise God for what I am.

When was the last time you cried? While I was biking on the way to Ubay. I saw this old man riding his balsa, pulled by his carabao, and I thought he looked like my maternal grandfather, lolo Ariston.. and at that time, the sun was just shining so beautifully in a very soft way, not too hot, yet very clear... i felt that even from my lolo Ariston whom I haven't even been thinking in time was "present " for my project. i was so overwhelmed by it.. and I took it as a message from God that I was indeed doing what He wanted me to do.. that was in Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008 at around 1145 am.

Who first told you that you're beautiful? My lolo (the late Atty. Victoriano D. Tirol, Sr.).. he always pinches my cheeks and calls me " akong linangkingan.. ka- guapa..!! bec. I was so dark when I was small.

What is your advice for maintaining your beauty? Have inner joy from having the Lord in your heart. as your personal Lord and saviour.. Eat right. Exercise.. Really exercise. Stay clean inside and outside.. Sleep. Rest when you're tired.. Stop when you're angry. Don't stay angry. Smile when you can and everytime you can.. Spread love. Hug people. Just be yourself. Focus on the positive side of everything and always believe that God is there no matter what.

Is there anything that you can't resist? Yes, butong.. young coconut.I gorge on them.

On what occasion do you lie? If I want to protect that person.

Which living person do you admire most? My parents (erstwhile Bohol governor David B. Tirol and provincial board member Amalia Reyes-Tirol)

Who or what is the greatest love of your life? My husband (Capt. Marlon Macuno of course. My son (Miguel Carlos) and then my family and then my friends and my patients.

Where would you like to go for romantic evening? Under the moon and the stars, lying on the sand, listening to the sound of the waves, just savoring the silence of the night.. no blaring music.. just the sound of nature around me.

What film influenced your life? I forgot the title, but it was this hearing impaired woman who learned how to dance despite her hearing disorder.. against all odds..

What is your greatest fear? None. I'm not afraid of anything because the Lord is with me and in me.

Are you into accessories? I'm a minor techy. I was tempted to get an iphone, no jewelries though.

Are you vain? Probably, define vain.

What do you think is your best asset? My eyes.

Anyway, have I told you that you look like younger than your age? Do you have secrets? Just my smile.. and my heart.. for those who know me and are not "afraid" of me (laughs)…

Does age, you know being a golden girl, affect your sex life? It shouldn't.. and no.

I'm curious, can you sing? Very well.

Type of music? All types.. soft rock, classical, jazz..

Favorite scent? At the moment, Dolce and Gabana light blue, Lacoste, and lovely by Sarah Jessica Parker.. I guess this is the vain in me because I feel incomplete if I leave the house without wearing one.

Fave book? The Bible.

Fave hang out? My house aside from roaming abroad when I can- abroad- Rome.

Sports? Biking, running, swimming, hiking.

Five things you can't live without? A book, my bible, my stethoscope, blanket, deodorant, ha ha ha

How do you start your day? Praying the moment I wake up.

What words or phrases do you overused? Tipasi!!

Name a moment that brings back happy memories? Silent peaceful moments..

Who is Mutya Kismet Tirol-Macuno that the public doesn't know or doesn't see but you wish they know? A deeply caring person who is not afraid to say what she feels she should say to help a situation improve for the betterment of everybody. But who should not be feared but just be understood and given effort to know more.

Is it real? The image of Padre Pio, an Italian saint is getting visible everyday in one of the pillars of the Baclayon Church (at the right wing of the Church fronting Immaculata High School). The 1st ever reunion of the University of Bohol High School Evening Session Batch 1998 was held on Sept. 27 at the Metro Centre Hotel. It was "to bring high school memories back and preserve the history of UBHSES '98." The event was attended by teachers (all were present led by Myrna Garsuta) and was organized by John Torralba. The next grand alumni homecoming is on May 9-10, 2009.
